mmcgallicher, this is a bit of dated reply but check out the wicked awesome reply I just got from chrispaap detailing how to check if this is a VMware issue. How is hardware status data propagated from VMAN to Orion via Integration?
-
Thanks Jane! Although I have to say that if people used the Orion Service Manager instead of services.msc then this call out would be unnecessary.
-
Amen.

When doing pre-sales engineering for new customers, this is the *single* most difficult concept for people to wrap their heads around. I have reduced many a sales team to tears trying to make them understand that they can't just quote node counts to new customers. Of course, throw in different licensing models for NPM,…

Sorry, I should have mentioned that these alerts were working for months and suddenly stopped. No changes to the platform (upgrades, etc.) and no changes to the alerts themselves.
-
Audits -- love and hate them. They give me a chance to prove that we are doing what we say we are doing but they also force me to prove it too.

Ignore isn't a deletion but more of a hide. The node gets added to DiscoveryIgnoredNode, DiscoveryIgnoredVolumes or DiscoveryIgnoredInterfaces respectively. They are definitely remembered as ignored. In fact, we run a report that gets sent out weekly so we can review the elements that have been ignored to ensure that we…

Whoa. Do you work for the same company I do? We're fighting the exact same battle with ServiceNow CMDB to Solarwinds. We're really close to being able to add a node to NPM via a process flow defined in ServiceNow. Our challenge is going to be bridging the gap from "OK, we've added a node -- now what do we monitor?". I'd…

Monday morning has been good to me. Logged into Firefox and fired up the web portal for NPM and all worked fine. I'm not quite sure what changed, but on a Monday morning I'm not going to ask questions. If anyone discovers anything I'd be interested to know in case this repeats with other customers.
-
Yeah, we thought about that as well, even though the PE is not on its own server. If the statistic isn't stored anywhere (which seems a little weird as *every* statistics seems to be stored some place in the Orion DB) then I will just resort to sending the webpage as a report.

One more question, just so I understand. (I thought I did until I started to write an email to our network team -- then realized I missed a part.) In a node transitioning from up to down, what is the total time period Fast Polling results in if, say, the node is actually down? Does the Fast Poll period continue non-stop,…

That's the detail I was looking for on ICMP response. First successful response, regardless of device state, is marked as the 'current response time' and then used to derive the average response time, based on the past 5 'current response times' recorded. Awesome -- off to take this back to our network team to go down…

Hmm, it must be dead. That's a shame. Although I think it only had one or two entries Glad to know there are others out there doing freelancing and consulting work. I think I can still say that I am the only SolarWinds consultant East of Toronto ... at least until someone proves me wrong! LinkedIn invite accepted!

Since you hired a Canadian, I think we bestow honourary citizenship. If you happen to like the Blue Jays -- welcome to the family!
-
You're pretty close to Canadian -- probably more so than my former stomping grounds of Windsor, Ontario. We were like Detroit South when I lived there...
-
Alas, no. While everyone is an honourary Canadian, I'm really trying to nail down where the Solarwinds folks are who actually live in Canada. I only know 6 or so and I trained all of them. I've heard rumours that they exist elsewhere but maybe, much like our beloved Sasquatch, the Canadian Solarwinds Professional is an…

On the job!
-
Hmm, that seems totally do-able, especially if the information is already in database. The downside is that your 'baseline' value will need to change periodically and you'll need to update your alert with the new baseline. I'll need to go and take a look but you might need to do a custom SQL (or SWQL!) alert to get to the…

Doh! Yes, I did mean to say SNMP. Vacation brain got in the way of thinking brain. Can we get the SAM documentation updated to reflect that PowerShell is supported up to, and including, v5? I know it means potentially pushing out PowerShell updates to a bunch of servers, but its good to know that we can run those versions…

Thanks for the confirmation dsbalcau -- that's exactly what I was hoping to hear!
-
Well, that may not be a bad solution either --- a dynamic monitoring screen that would allow you to watch various elements and then jump to (instead of drill down) to the actual application. I'll do some digging on iframes and see if it will fit the bill. Thanks for the ideas --- Josh

After some chatting with the UX team and here on Thwack, I've come to the conclusion that agents are pretty great -- in the right circumstances. We are going to stick with our SNMP and/or WMI stance for now, but when needed we'll be using agents. We're also defaulting to server-initiated and have communicated to the…
-
Oh -- that is very concerning. Have you submitted a case to support with diagnostics for their assessment?
-
Perfect. That was the answer I've been giving folks (or some form of that) and just wanted to confirm. Some of our other admins questioned my choice to not use the "recommended" method
-
Help me understand this a little more. If an agent is deployed with server-initiated polling and the agent goes offline, how often does the poller try and contact the agent? What is the duration of the communication attempt if the agent does not respond? What I am trying to figure out here is the implications to that 64K…
-
I did that too but I always like to make things a little more personal, where possible. I want it to seem like a thank-you gift, not bribery So far I've sent a polo and a IT Hero coffee mug this month. At this rate I'm going to need some more Thwack points!
-
Thanks Danielle. If the gift item idea isn't feasible now, maybe we can at least get Solarwinds-esque thank-you cards. Say thank-you and spread the Solarwinds joy, what could be better!?!
-
Or when you have to post to Thwack to ask how many is too many?
-
richardelms you should check the time that the alert triggered and then dig into the data to see if that is actually the case. I have seen extremely busy servers be slow to respond with data and trigger actions (depending what they are configured to be) causing a short delay which allows data inconsistent with the alert…

When building a new alert, whether in NPM 11.5 or 12.0, select the following.
