Thank you Peter, I agree, I think the one you can't afford to skimp on is people... good people go a long way in achieving the other two.
-
Thanks Michael, I'm right there with you, I've used WSUS primarily for patching in my IT career, and yes there is peace in mindless repetition!
-
No problem, thanks for reading.

Thank you!

Yep, I was actually thinking of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade when I wrote #5.... "that's not the cup of a carpenter..."

Thanks david.botfield

Good point, do your research before going with any tool, open source or enterprise.

Herein lies the problem. You make a really good point HerrDoktor it should be a "comes with the territory" moment for organizations. The issues is, most organizations really aren't ready for the migration to the cloud, they feel like it makes sense but are unaware of what they have to give up in order to be fully cloud…
-
I get your point HerrDoktor, if you can afford it, then go for it.
-
Thanks rschroeder! Trusting is all good, but you have to verify. This post wasn't meant to be a SolarWinds promotional piece, just straight up tech info. -Greg

Thank you!

bobmarley Thanks for reading Bob! You make a really good point that I didn't think of. Sometimes CPU/Memory/Disk space isn't a concern for some, there is the need for availability (99.999%), response time and network usage. Thanks for bringing that up. Has anyone seen better availability with certain providers over…

Thanks for reading! Appreciate the kind words.

Thanks for the comment. Data security should be your #1 concern, especially with the cloud.
-
I find that your experience is par for the course when it comes to monitoring... documentation is key, especially with positions that have a lot of turnover!
-
I feel your pain, I've been there and done that. Hopefully in the near future you can figure out a more automated process. Keep your head up!
-
Agreed, testing is always good when you are dealing with patches. You never know the effect a patch is going to have on your system.

Hyperconverged is here my friend... get some training and learn it!

HerrDoktor Great points, all great points. There are times where I feel like going to the cloud is the best solution for organizations, such as the SMB. In a large enterprise, I don't think it's the only good solution, and in fact sometimes having a hybrid solution is best. You can't be the paranoid, cash stuffed under…

Yes, documentation, at least good documentation does take a lot of your time. However, if its done right the first time, you only need to make minor updates as the project grows.
-
Thank you, glad you liked it.

Thanks smttysmth02gt, I know it is a never ending topic, and I don't imagine that will change anytime soon. I also agree, that you can't really be an all or nothing shop, generally speaking you will have some aspect of enterprise tooling in your datacenter.
-
Oh man, that's the worst... can't say I haven't experienced that before, make copies of your documentation and put it in several places.

Carpenter's Cup is an amazing band name... if someone hits it big with that name, I'm going to sue for royalties!
