I am 80% done with a 2+ year complete top to bottom network redesign and DR capabilities. Each step carefully documented for safe keeping and the obligatory 3 AM " oh ****" call. The primary reason for the uber documentation, it was lacking or inadequate and did not survive the most destructive of disasters, the untimely…

Preparing/Waiting for food - A patient man I am not when it comes to food. Let's not get started on coffee! When America was better - Time clouds memory and heals old wounds.... I tend to keep my rose colored glasses on the shelf. Fake News - Welcome to the new reality of gossip. Time was two people would stand over a…

I've decided to move my router a couple of times, finally settling for a spare bedroom.. Hooked my laptop hardwire to the router and now doing well... Only getting 100mb speed here in Maine, but throw in 2 cell phones, 3 smart tv's, alexa and an IOT garage door opener and we can get spread pretty thin... it works.. It's a…

Devices can be secured. The user on the other hand needs to acknowledge their part in securing their machine. Effective policies, training and reviews are key to making the user more aware that their actions or lack of action can have an effect on the operating environment. It is no longer an "IT Problem"!

Wow... nicely done datachick !!!! It's always easy to blame the network.... Recently, thanks to NPM I was able to "inform" one of our software vendors that it was indeed their application with graphs, history and all while they were logged into my network remotely. Data IS Power... Proof Rules!!!

rschroeder all outstanding points and I agree totally 1000% But there are some other things to consider. * Size of organization - The smaller the staff the greater the impact on operational staffing * Organization size can and will limit budget. * Due to #1 we are forced into the alternatives you suggest. (often on our…

Playing dumb is easy for me... I get the same results your do. I find interjecting humor helps.... There is no better tension reliever than a well placed joke, humorous comment or self effacing comment. It does get everyone to relax. On the subject of food... ANYTHING with bacon! Nice job on this...

Call it collaboration, call it teamwork..... either way you have to rely on others to do your job! To think that you can go it alone is the definition of hubris...... Recently, we moved our primary system to an outsourced solution, besides being the project manager, I had to fight the notion that this was an IT problem. It…

@"[Deleted User]" I've played the yoyo game in and then out of the office. right now after 5-6 in I am enjoying being out for almost two weeks. You clearly outline all the great benefits of WFH. I am more efficient at home, the peace and quiet (benefit of grown kids) and the ability to take a quick walk or just step…

sqlrockstar great holiday edition. Schools and data - my children are very careful not to over expose their personas in the digital world. Problem... most elementary school technologists are focused on classroom applications and tools and not data security. (trust me I know...) Apple and older phones... I get it but a…

I tend to agree with all of you who pointed out that syslog is only part of the story. The more complex the environment, the more important documentation and processes that are staged to come up/online only when prerequisites are acheived. It's a bit like conducting an orchestra in that timing is everything. That said your…

We do something at least once a month. We do it in a "soft" way most of the time. "Soft ways" include: * intranet post about recent hacks.... * A did you know quiz * I did a series on passwords.... what not to do and what makes a good password. * Always saying thanks to users if they call for us to check... even if it is a…
