Steve Balmer - I agree with rschroeder if it's true.... good news. NY Times in the cloud - given that I was on their election site in November and it worked flawlessly, I have to say good for them.... now if subscriber info gets lost......... another story. Intentions or Results - Results every time!!! Talk is cheap....…

Documentation..... Remember the old adage "No job is complete until the paperwork is done!".. Sadly a lot of IT folks run away from documenting as though doing documentation was like getting the plague. (But I digress). Because we are a smaller shop, I have a couple of "Break Glass in case of emergency" USB drives in other…

a few more.... one or two somewhat obscure..... Space Above and Beyond, Batman, Hogan's Hero's and MI-5 (Spooks (UK).

rschroeder hit on some awesome ideas and potential realities..... ( the good, the bad, the ugly and the possible!!!!) I'd love to experience work life without the mundane break/fix stuff.... No more "it doesn't work ... just fix it" calls.... My only requirement... Let me do it remotely! (Winter in South Carolina....…

wow did this hit home Dez !!! A great article.... Working in a highly regulated environment, it is at times a formidable balancing act, not unlike the old plate on a pole balancing trick, Keep them spinning and you are fine, drop one and you risk the others being smashed to bits.

This series has been though provoking and terrific. I agree the "most" sensitive data needs to sit in my data center. I am responsible for it .... I donot abdicate that responsibility to others.

Love the move to/copy to.... Big help for me sqlrockstar Kudos!!!!

Prior to my career in IT, I worked for a once huge, but now defunct supermarket chain. It was my first experience managing people. The best advise I ever received was from my manager who said " You want to earn respect, get in there and show them you'll work along side of them and you are not an "order barker".....".…

Well done again sqlrockstar! So I put my data center on the botom of the ocean. I can just see explaining SCUBA lessons for training.. New expenses.... Zip lock bags, wet suits, air compressors... works for me!

Points well taken... I guess after 36 years I've gotten used to fighting this battle (off and on)! (BTW.... new budget cycle.... following your suggestions!)

@"tomiannelli" Great work.... Your poem is excellent!!!! Change is constant. It is what guides us as humans......

40-50 people.... Looking at this as a part of a revamped technology in the office training program.

Well done! Great post.... as I tell me users all the time "not everything is a number 1 priority!" Alert deafness can be fatal! Focus on what matters most.

Since March I've lived life on both sides of the river. Each side is marked by long and short duration stays. The "normal" side is hardly normal, an office often barren of my colleagues and empty parking spaces. Yet despite all of this there is a welcome and peaceful quiet that I have come to appreciate. Gone are the drive…

The 7 times the world almost bought the "dirt nap" piece was great.... Question... like others have noted ... how many don't we know about? Messages not scanned... wow someone who respects my privacy.... Ya.. not so much! IBM = I Bought Mine or Inferior But Marketable..... (just some oldies but goodies!) VMWare and AWS....…

True in a big box or chain environment... Slightly different outlook if it is your own business.

A little late this week. This work thing keeps getting in the way. 1. IOT.... I keep thinking of the "Trouble with Tribbles" Star Trek episode. Their cute and we need to have them.... They mulitply because we love them... Yes IT will get run over initially.... But eventually our warnings will be heeded... 2. DDOS ... Like…

I might add one more thing...... Less is more...more is less... The quality of the meeting increases when the number of attendees decreases!!!!! (casual observation confirmed by an experience this morning....)

Thanks as always.... sqlrockstar ! The ex-admin thing always scares me.... I think of the opportunity to put rogue code in place and then it executes at a future time and place... I do know of cases where departing employees have wreaked havoc... That said... always know what your people are doing... and check! Gamestop -…

@"adatole" thank you sir

I love diagrams/pictures.... helps tremendously .... I'd be lost without Visio and my whitebaord to map things out..... the mpre detail the better.

We don't allow shopping on the production network. We do have an independent "guest" wireless network and smart phone shopping almost an Olympic event on Cyber Monday.

Wow.. great article.... on the bad mentor item..... One of my earliest bosses once said " you'll be managed and shaped by all different types of managers.... take the best... leave the rest"
