Setting: Financial Services Data Center Location: Major Northeast City Timeframe: Early 2000's We had a data center that housed our mainframe, server, San and network gear. It also housed our inhouse statement printing setup. Friday afternoon, we get a pallet delivery of paper from our supplier to the waiting area of our…

Back to dumb terminal days. (Circa 1986) I'm a VMS Sysadmin. We were moving a group of application programmers from one side of the floor to the other. Not an uncommon experience in this place I worked. Friday comes and I walk around an remind not to power off their VT220's as they were getting new ones. I get to one…

sqlrockstar Interesting write up. IMHO AI is another in a long line of "better than sliced bread" things. It's promise will be partially realize (maybe 75%) but the hype will drive too many not well thought out decisions. Data is the driver. Analysis the tool.... after that roll the dice.

Great article. Having just migrated 4 months ago we are going through the "who does what...with what" phase...

Edited Embryo's - A little too close to Zager and Evans "In the year 2525" for me. Worst Internet - Thankfully I live in a well served metro area. Long term I think it is a public/private partner ship that put Broadband access as important as electricity and telephone service was last century. A chip - Ok... so let me get…

Courtesy of GODADDY... One of my daughters is a blogger and she is on a crusade about this...

Name changes are the things that companies spend MILLIONS on! It's called re-branding.... It is also an excellent example of when people who know nothing are given the task of making something sound new and exciting. (Think garbage man vs Sanitation Engineer.... you get the picture!)

Outstanding!!! there's nothing quite like truth and the proof of it to make a decision quick and painless. "Facts are stubborn things..." - John Adams Great points!!! Thank you kong.yang....

My biggest fear.... that a "new" as yet undetected vulnerability is wreaking havoc on my environment, and that single event is now on every news channel, company logo big and bold.

Bacon Roses.... One of my daughters creations for Fathers Day.. (her husband loved them!)

We enlisted a third paarty (well known reseller) to assist as we were migrating from an on-prem non-exchange environment. All in all 95 out of 100.. Problem spots: calendars, contacts and large mail stores. 4 months in we are still dealing with 1-2 small issues, but a huge win for us. (as for accounts - as soon as the…

The machine fired me - Interesting article. In some ways it reminded me of when I worked for a LARGE fortune 500 company division. Their staffing model was fairly predictable.... hire when wanted... RIF when needed. One of their more interesting methods of performing a RIF was to notify employees in smaller remote offices…

And... you hope that they are as diligent as you are with respect to security and ownership of issues.

Social media is a tool... unfortunately, people believe that everyone is who or what they say they are. It is human nature to trust that everyone is good. I try to explain to folks that the internet is like the giant elephant that never forgets. Every post, thought or missive you enter, might comeback to haunt you, or…

Talk about timing... This thread came along as I am struggling with O365 decision. I am doing the analysis of O365 right now. I need to replace my mail system (non-exchange)... Security is of prime importance. jeremymayfield thank you for your insights, particularly the comments on OPEx and CapEx models... (I am at that…

Does your organization have an IoT strategy? Only devices approved by IT are allowed. Wireless "guest" network open to employees and certain visitors. Each device is identified and approved. We are talking phones, laptops and tablets. No consumer items. How many IoT devices do you manage? If you count DVR's (10) Hotel…

Google....Nest and microphones..... Are we really surprised that this happened? The one of the many downsides of IOT... hidden in plain site.... brilliant but scary!

The 300bps.... just the sound brings back fond memories... Like dropping a deck of IBM cards and having to put them back in sequence. Ripping the paper tape and then trying to re-feed it. or my favorite.... a magnetic reel tape drive going out of control and cutting the tape into ity bity pieces in the vacuum well... 2400…
