Don;t forget closet and patch panel labeling documentation and convention. Along with that, switchport descriptions should be short enough to be unique on SHOW INTERFACE STATUS, so you can easily paste them into excel to do cross references with ARP and MAC (assuming you don't have a working UDT setup);. Finally, I think…

This is badly out of date, and should be deleted or updated.

I find it really odd of Cisco to add this feature on only 1 platform. Just sayin ...

Do you use it with other SolarWinds products, such as NPM or Kiwi Syslog, or with Wireshark? I think that by installing Traceng 1st, you can dodge problems created by other products that also install some sort of pcap.

Eventually, we'd get so many bus and tag cables, or even thicker, DEC MassBuss cables, plus power cables, the air conditioning wouldn't flow properly under the floor. Pulling all that cable is like Battle Rope Boot Camp.

You are so right, @rschroeder! While a lot of user experience happens in the time slice the program is running, it's also a question of "what does the OS need to do during the 16.66 msec clock interrupt. For the Apple II (and the Atairi 800 I had), the OS had very little to do. Ataris could even interrupt at the end of…

Media reports often use the term "hack" to mean an attempt to get into a system - successful or not. Anyone who looks at a firewall drop log knows that by that definition, we are all being hacked constantly. I think we should push back on that meaning. Hackers also often like to distinguish between hacking as sport and…

I must say that I've never seen a good Best Practices for cabling and labeling that addresses real world situations. A few guidelines; 1. Establish minimum and maximum length patch cables. You don't need a 25 foot patch cable in a rack with patch panels and switches. 2. Use multiple colors - it's a little easier to trace…

The link to the KB article does not work (today?).

One cannot scan IPv6 address ranges. A /64 would take decades to scan. What is needed here is the ability to pull IPv6 Neighbor cache from IOS, ASA, and NX-OS. =Seymour=

If Slack is too much of a cultyure shift, I think most people use email to send text alerts. Key things for that are: 1. Each cell carrier has a different email address format. See: https://www.digitaltrends.com/mobile/how-to-send-a-text-from-your-email-account/ 2. You get both the Subject and the Message body in the text…

Will not install on Win10 Home with Npcap 0.995 installed. Please convert this product to use Npcap. WinPcap's days are over, at least according the the Nmap folks: Npcap vs WinPcap

This is one reason why big enterprises go for application auditing, and take away admin rights from users to prevent most (but not all) installs. Cloud sharing has another name - data leakage. Cloud vendors don't make auditing of shares easy or even possible. Corporate cloud might have some tools, but only blocking all…

I agree. We're starting to add APC UPSes to NCM, and we already have some Dell switches. I do see Schneider and Dell advisories in the feed. I don't find the NIST links provided by NCM to be useful - too much additional drilling needed to get to the relevant CIsco info. So I google the word "Cisco" plus the CVE number to…

This is a great start! How about NTA Top Talker Alerts? They're particularly tricky. You might include them under some generic heading like "SQL Macro alerts" or "Alerts that return a web page by email that requires a login".

I've been fixing computers since the 1970s. The companies that train, and stay technically focused are the ones that succeed in the long term. Often they will have a policy that if you leave, you must reimburse the company for recent training out of your final paycheck. The companies that are driven by marketing department…

AppInsight is part of SolarWInds SAM (Server and Application Monitor). AppInsight consists of a set of templates for common applications, like SQL, IIS, Exchange, Orion itself, common Windows services, etc. SAM uses either WMI or the SolarWinds client that you push to the server to poll performance stats. SAM then displays…

Jim - We have a network constrained by WAN links. So I created specific 24 hour reports for some of our biggest apps and servers. I email myself some of the reports as a PDF, and file for future reference and manual trending. I've created custom web pages for some apps so that the app team can see their own particular apps…

New Orleans in the winter or spring ... just not the last week of Mardi Gras or during Jazz Fest. Too hard to decide which is better to attend.

Do you add the dir for traceng to your path? The installer only seems to do some licensing. It will check each time for presence of WinPcap, though, and run the installer for it if it doesn't find it.

I worked at a hospital for 10 years. Their excuse for not giving better raises was that they were limited by their HR rules. There was no rule for increase based on education or training. So you had to quit, and re-hire to get a significant raise - and some people did that. But doing networking where people's lives are…

Will not install if Npcap is installed, at least with Npcap 0.995. In my opinion, SolarWinds should stop using WinPcap. Npcap vs WinPcap

OK, I'll admit to coming out on the wrong side of 80/20 many times in my 40 year career. A lot of times, I was simply fighting the language or tool, and had to abandon an approach. I would add another factor to the 80/20 triage - pain. How difficult is it to do the task? Is it 1 click and wait for a result while I do…

I did a bunch of testing on this today. Installing SolarWinds-FT-TracerouteNG-1.0.0 with the latest npcap 0.996 already installed produces error popup: This error happens whether you install npcap and check off WinPcap API mode in Nnpcap or not. You can uninstall Npcap, install Traceng and its winpcap, and then reinstall…

Bump! I also work at a federal agency. We need IPv6 support especially in NTA for troubleshooting. Also see https://thwack.solarwinds.com/ideas/3938 IPAM Neighbor Cache (Can't scan a /64!) and https://thwack.solarwinds.com/ideas/3939 IPAM DHCPv6

There's several things that affect color sensitivity. Possession of a Y and 1 X chromosome in a majority of cells predisposes a person to colorblindness: Color blindness - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia It's also been anecdotally note by many spouses with 2 X chromosomes, that the ones with 1 Y and 1 X also "do not…

I think this FAQ needs some major revisions and corrections. Here's a few specific comments: Q - If we already have an unlimited NPM license, am I still limited to 1 network sensor? A - Yes, the one network and ten server sensors included out of the box apply to licenses of all sizes. You can, however, purchase additional…

This was caused by KSS-9.7.2-Hotfix-1 on my system. I reinstalled Kiwi_Syslog_Server_9.7.2.setup.exe, and it kept my old settings, and now File> Setup works once again.
