I think one of the great things about the legacy model was that everybody had a specialty. There are too many things for one person to be specialized in all of them yet if you read a lot of the job postings out there it seems this is the expectation of many companies. In our current model as things have progressed I think…

I wrote one of these a while back, it can be found HERE.

Yes, I would love to see this support Linux. This would allow us to move completely to LEM as our FIM solution!

As we are adding a lot more Custom Properties to Orion for asset management having the ability to better manage the custom properties with this grouping feature and the Arrange Order feature is becoming more and more necessary. It doesn't seem like these things would be very difficult to implement and would be a huge…

Wow, this is all awesome advice! I love how relevant this all is to the technical world without being technical at all!

rschroeder I don't disagree with your points on short-sightedness when it comes to funding our government. However, I thinks the problem comes from the perception that the government is ineffective at using the funding that it has efficiently. The government needs to do a better job at being more transparent about how…

Exactly, why would anybody need a smart light bulb? When it comes to light bulbs, the dumber the better! LOL

cobrien I have not seen it, I am not even sure what NOM/NAM is. At the risk of asking a stupid question, would you mind sharing what NOM/NAM is?

Yes, that will work if you only want them to see interfaces. In our environment I want them to see nodes an interfaces. For example, if a cusotmer has a managed system with us I would like to lock them down to see the system that they have managed as well as just one interface on an upstream switch and/or router. This is…

I have a love/hate relationship with certifications. I love the idea of having a certificate to show that you are knowledgeable about some topic. On the flip side I have worked with and interviewed many people with certifications that didn't actually know much about the topic they were certified in. There is also the bit…

Below is the chart and then the exported data example from the same chart where the time is in UTC.

I completely agree with all of these items. It is also helpful to quickly identify those members of the team that are more reluctant or resist change, if those people are not managed appropriately they have the potential to poison the rest of the team and even cause the entire project to fail. Managing those folks doesn't…

I think you make a great point here. I have found that for the larger technology solutions to be successful you really need to partner with the vendor, you can't just install it, step back and expect everything to be perfect. My company has a long history of having tools issues; new technology tools are bought in, people…

Will the Linking transactions to nodes and applications respect the custom properties for the sake of restricting customers to see only specific transaction monitors?

I realize it may not be exactly what you are looking for but you can export and import data between the two SolarWinds IP address management tools.

From a technical standpoint cloud is certainly just hosting your stuff on another providers equipment; however, it ultimately represents much more than that. Cloud offers a different cost model based on consumption as well as a lot more flexibility just to name a few. Cloud certainly represents new challenges when it comes…

I think one of the unfortunate realities of BC/DR is that companies often put the burden of it on IT and expect them to put it in place and that will always fail. As has been pointed out here, BC/DR is much larger than just IT and it needs to be treated as such with all necessary stakeholders identified and equally…

SolarWinds always makes a great showing at events, you guys could write the book on marketing and productization.

I am responsible for all of our Microsoft and VMWare licensing as a very small part of what I do and I can tell you that it's a HUGE pain in the rear. The only piece of advice I really have is to work with good licensing VAR's and they will do a pretty good job of keeping you up-to-date on the up-coming changes that are…

As odd as it may sound the biggest problem I have had with databases is backups. Backups that have caused storage slowdowns, backups that have caused failovers, backups that have caused VM's to quiesce (which databases really don't like) etc.

aLTeReGo I just upgraded to SAM 6.4 last night and this morning when SW Support called me regarding an issue with my report logos going away I was told that both TLS 1.0 and 1.1 are required to be on otherwise the report logos will go away.

I also can relate to how you change in IT as you become older more seasoned in your career. Even more so I can relate to the problem of holding on to tools too long as they become toxic. These were some great pointers and really gave me a chance to look at myself and how I may have some opportunities to make some positive…

This was a lot of fun last year so I look forward to it this year. I also think it's great to see so many new people contributing as writers this year!

The two biggest myths about cloud are "it will be less expensive" and "you won't need IT staff to manage it". Both of these could not be further form the truth. Moving to the cloud changes your cost model and you need to make sure you have a good understanding of what this is going to look like ahead of time or you will be…

Will this include the ability to modify the warning and critical levels of the different steps? We are looking at purchasing WPM Unlimited for several of our clients and we would love the ability to have them modify their own thresholds on those. Of course in our environment this would also need to enforce any limitations…

This is some awesome stuff, thanks for sharing ecklerwr1

Great write up networksecurityprincess, I always enjoy reading the stuff you write. With that being said, my experience has not found many of the API's out there are as mature as they need to be to fully support this. I feel like both the cloud providers and the "off the shelf" application providers need to have…

Right now I'm doing about 200 nodes and 5500 elements if I include custom pollers on 3.3GB of RAM on both the database and the poller. Netflow cannot be turned on :(, but I'm well aware of why. The new poller and database server both have 12GB, DL360G6 for the poller, and 380G6 for the database. I spend about 40% of my…

i had a similar issue recently where the credentials i was using got hosed with a certain domain controller. so all authentication went south and really messed up APM monitors using WMI. Thanks for the suggestion; however, I know that this isn't a credential problem. The thing is the WMI timeouts are intermittent and…

We are experiencing the WMI timeout problem as well. After a difficult troubleshooting process with support which included having us completely destroy our system, we (SW Support and I) have determined that the problem is not APM. The problem seems to be WMI just not responding. Has anybody been able to find a solution to…
