Seems that as one thing becomes easier something else emerges that adds difficulty back in. If I think back to managing systems 10 years ago to now it was much different, many of the things that were difficult then are easy now but we have new challenges. I think that is just the natural cycle of things.

It's important that we as professionals insist on enforcing best security practices even though they will almost always make things less convenient for us and everyone else. We also need to assume that at some point we will be breached and have the necessary tools in place to detect and remediate as quickly as possible.…

I always try to explain to people that InfoSec is not about tools, it's about people and process. Tools are absolutely necessary but you can't set them up and walk away and consider the job done. InfoSec is a people intensive function and it's critical that the decision makers in organizations understand this. Patching…

One thing I have noticed is that while network engineers are typically great at building networks, they often don't take the large picture into consideration and make allocations for a good tools infrastructure as part of the design. A good tools infrastructure will make collecting and maintaining the necessary audit data…

Organizations may think they are getting away with spending less $$$ but there are a lot of hidden costs in DIY and open source.

This to me feels like the tool versus people/policy/procedure. Having a tool in place may check the box but it isn't a complete solution to the problem. You need the people/policy/procedure in addition to the tool to have a complete solution.

Yeah, KB articles are the worst. While I realize the importance of it, I totally hate doing documentation; I find the entire process mind numbing.

No because we are an MSP and the SIEM is a component of the the services we offer.

Dobbs you make such a great point here! As far as the point made about getting the right data, I whole heartedly agree with this, but often it is not possible to filter at source and therefore the job of a good SIEM solution is to hide the 'noise' and to bubble to the surface the truly useful information and in a way…

I have to agree with others, that hat is certainly a must have in my SW gear collection. Virtualization Manager really is an amazing tool for managing a virtual environment. I have had the opportunity to run it in a lab and connect it to my production environment and in less than an hour (including the VMAN setup time) I…

Wow, I have never heard about the intermittent fasting thing, what exactly is that supposed to do for you?

Dez I think it's great that you point out to "check the general "the sky is falling" mentality" as it seems like we have at least one of these types of events every few weeks now and we can't all be running around like chicken little if we plan to keep things running. It's important to have a really solid block & tackle…

We are just emerging from the darkness of "Shadow IP" and have implemented SolarWinds IPAM. We have a LOT of IP space and a ton of subnets within so populating the new tool has take a very long time. I really hope at some point we can begin to leverage the DNS Management capabilities of the product for DNS management…

Microsoft Almost Doubled Azure Cloud Revenue Last Quarter We build and manage Azure environments for clients and the demand for this is HUGE! Why your voice makes you cringe That is totally fascinating! I hate the way I sound and always felt the same way as you. It's nice to see that there is a scientific explanation. Why…

It seems pretty simple to me; a world without IT Pro's would be a world with only IT Con's.

With regards to the decline in sanctification with the government systems, I would be willing to hedge a bet that the decline in sanctification is less due to performance and more due to overall usability or user friendliness. Unfortunately most things designed by the government are not at all user friendly. It also…

I think this is an absolutely fantastic article and certainly got me thinking about how to leverage existing tools as part of my InfoSec strategy! One thing I would caution against is looking to OpenSource tools because they are "free". Unfortunately this could not be further from the truth, there is a cost associated with…

I totally agree with Jfrazier, I have been the one up late at night trying to find the documentation that turned out to never have existed. This brings up another good point in that it's not just important to have good documentation but to also do a good job of managing and organizing that documentation so others can find…

This is such a great and well timed post. My manager was just recently telling me how we need better implementation of the 5-why system. Often our clients come to us with solutions instead of problems. We often can see that these solutions are not good but the problem has always been breaking it down to really understand…

I really enjoy working with LEM and would be happy to help; what specifically are you looking for?

The needle is getting smaller and the haystack is getting better!

I guess that kind of makes sense but I guess when I think of a Power User, I am imagining somebody pushing the limits of the product and really utilizing a wide array of it's capabilities; not a guy using for his home systems. Because of this I still feel like I am missing something on this poll and why a poll about power…

How your configure your network for different situations can make a huge difference. We were recently slapped in the face with this reality when we learned that all of our storage networking was done incorrectly with our Hyper-V environment. After going back and fixing things we saw HUGE improvements. We had mistakenly…

Physical security really is the most basic level of security, if you can't get that right then you probably aren't going to get the rest of it right either.

I was going to respond to the email but figured it might be better to put it here for visibility to the entire community and so that they have the opportunity to improve upon my ideas... We are a service provider and we heavily use Orion as our monitoring portal for our customers thus requiring muti-tenancy capabilities. I…

That seems like a pretty good list and I am not sure I have much that I could add to it. We have been using VoIP here for years now so I don't even think about it much anymore as we have very few problems with it. The biggest problem we have had is the occasional DDoS attack against it.
-
cobrien; ok, at this point you have my attention. How is this different than Orion? If I am running Orion (with several modules) is there a migration path over to this new product?

I was under the impression that this was something SolarWinds was working on based on conversations I had with them.

With the right tools an Accidental DBA could be an overnight sqlrockstar (like how I did that ). While we don't have DPA (yet), our DBA relies heavily on AppInsight for SQL and with that level of insight has been able to significantly help a lot of our clients. When you take a job that takes hours to run down to only…

I think it's interesting that you noted that people always feel threatened when an outside resource is brought in to help. While I totally agree with the statement I have always found that bringing in an outside resource to help can be a very positive thing if done correctly. If the outside resource is really knowledgable…
