  • While I love the fact the Toolset features have been moved to the WebUI, I don't see how SolarWinds can justify charging for this product. The real-time tools should be included as part of NPM and SAM and shouldn't be at an extra cost, especially not a per-seat extra charge. In SAM I get the real-time process explorer,…
  • That you can ditch your IT folks I think has to be the biggest myth of the cloud to date. While doing things in the cloud (at all levels; SasS, PaaS, IaaS, etc.) is certainly different, is still very much requires technical people that understand how it all works and how to make all of the different services work together.…
  • Great write up sqlrockstar; I especially liked the bits about Monitoring and Alerting. I can't tell how frustrating it is to hear somebody to ask for something to be monitored and assume that they need alerts also. When I ask them why they need alerts they always tell me "well, I just want to be aware of it". Do people…
  • I am not doing what I would consider an adequate job at this time for cloud based or SaaS based solutions. I just recently posted THIS thread regarding this for Azure SaaS based SQL. On the up side, I did recently note that on the Roadmap for SAM and VMAN both indicate they are working on "Cloud" based monitoring. I…
  • Can I upgrade NPM to v11 and leave NCM on v7.2.2? I am trying to avoid having to upgrade both NPM and NCM in the same maintenance window and I also don't want to go to v7.3 with NCM if I don't need to.
  • I like to think that adatole is my alter-ego, that way I get to think that I am traveling around and doing all of the awesome things he is doing! Thanks for sharing all the awesomeness of your travels with us!
  • As always thanks for sharing! I found the article regarding HIPAA particularly interesting as we specialize in (amongst other things) hosting HIPAA environments for clients. It's scary how many clients we have worked with to find they really have no clue as to their obligations around security, logging etc.
  • I always tell people that "Data doesn't lie". Many time there has been conflicting information on when a series of events took place and it's very satisfying to be in the room with actual data from the monitoring system showing when the events took place and taking all of the guess work out of the equation.
  • I think it's great to see Microsoft causing this kind of disruption! Within Azure Microsoft has also been building a very powerful AI system and I can only imagine what might be possible when they start (and maybe they already have) leveraging that to go after these guys.
  • Good article and great points that many folks still haven't taken the time to understand. In the virtual world it's become less effective and often detrimental to try and solve your problems just by throwing more resources at it. Now you need to actually tune your systems and make sure things are right-sized to optimize…
  • It seems no matter how much monitoring we add; we still frequently encounter problems that are not detected by the monitoring system until they cause something to go down. Ultimately it always goes back to the logs!
  • This is awesome, can't wait. Now I just need to get my systems upgraded from Windows 2k8 R2 so I can actually upgrade them.
  • I would think SolarWinds would be motivated to put this in place as I think it's the only thing left that needs to be implemented before they can remove the old reporting system without reducing functionality. --Bump--
  • This certainly was a crazy week; unfortunately this is becoming the new normal. If this is becoming the new normal does that mean we are being desensitized to it and accepting it?
  • Leon Adato; I would certainly agree with your concerns as I have had those problems problems as well. My expectation is that using the agent will be a new option and not the only way to do things. If that is the case you can pick and choose to use it only when it makes sense.
  • I find it crazy that you can't even trust the facts in the news anymore. The entire purpose of the Press was that they were supposed to be the watchdogs and fact checkers of society and now they are the ones we need to have checked... at what point did this go off the rails?
  • Have a fantastic time and have some fun for me too! Unfortunately I don't get out to nearly as many events as I would like. I did have a fantastic time presenting at SWUG Seattle though!
  • Ever since we added a dedicated DevOps team to our company they have been changing the way we do business.
  • rschroeder your comment: I'm surprised at the solution. I figured SW would have an enterprise trap/syslog/filter/HA solution to offer for beaucoup bucks. Proving I've become jaded and cynical by other companies. I was forgetting that Solarwinds can be about the results instead solely about selling product. made me laugh.…
  • I agree with the sentiment of this post 110%. With that being said, I think all too often the problem is the reward system still promotes the hoarding of knowledge. How many times have you watched the "hero" behavior rewarded? Some problem occurs and one person comes to the rescue and saves the day by solving the problem…
  • I actually had not thought about it that way but that is definitely true. The complexity of InfoSec as a discipline is that it requires that you have at least a moderate level of proficiency in just about every one of the other major disciplines (Network, Windows, Linux, etc); when I was first starting out in the industry…
  • We leverage both internal and external solutions. In all honesty I have not found the external data to be very reliable; most of the alerts we receive from our external service are not able to be correlated or substantiated with any internal monitoring (which we do a lot of). Internal tools are important to us because we…
  • Man, I always miss the good stuff. My company keeps me chained to a chair in a closet.
  • Our management team is completely data driven so I generally have not had problems getting access to the necessary tools to provide the data that they need. Our largest challenge is making sure all of our staff is trained on how to properly use the tools to mine the data. The training problem largely exists due to the lack…
  • tallyrich I totally agree with you on both points. These cases are great examples of totally false advertising on their products and the companies involved should be held accountable.
  • I like that you pointed out that the challenge is less becoming compliant and more staying compliant. That is certainly what we have found as well. The more different compliance requirements you try to adhere to the more difficult it is to stay compliant.
  • I guess I am going to have to be the bad guy and disagree. I believe a snapshot can be a backup. The entire purpose of a backup is to create a method to restore. If the work you are doing can be restored from a snapshot if things go sideways then a snapshot is a backup. Backups are a tricky thing, I like to think of them…
  • michael stump I agree with you completely. Unfortunately most environments I have seen are setup this way and the larger the organizations are, it seems it's more likely that the isolated silos exist.
  • Congrats Leon, it's well deserved!
  • I think User Experience monitoring is important but not at the cost of more traditional monitoring. A buddy of mine works for a company that had this great idea of just focusing on User Experience monitoring with the idea that knowing their User Experience should be their focal point. What they had not considered was what…
