I think it really helps to reinforce that we are all normal people outside of the office as well and a great way to do this is with company sponsored team events. We recently had our team go out for dinner and pool and then we broke into two different groups and did escape rooms which was a super fun event.

This is an awesome idea, I can't wait to participate and see what others have to post as well!
-
Great points Jfrazier! These are all of the same challenges I deal with.
-
Yeah, that works but feels like an odd way of handling it. I think it would work better as an attribute of the property itself versus as a configuration on the Custom Property resource.

adatole you not only make good points but you provide a fun read while doing so. I find that I get very frustrated with peers in the industry that are very tool specific, in that I mean they feel that they have to have very specific tools to be successful and they have a disdain for all other tools. Strangely I have ran…

We are going the Splunk route as well due to it's flexibility but I have no experience with it. We had a vendor do the implementation and I am hoping to get some training soon since I am being told I will be the one to support it. I have seen a bit of it thus far based on what the vendor has showed me and it makes me…

I would have really liked to go to Ignite, a few of our execs will be there including our CEO. adatole I would be really interested to hear what kind of feedback you guys get at these types of events regarding the SolarWinds products, specifically as it pertains to how people find they compare to other products in the…

One thing that most companies don't do but they would be smart to would be to provide their employees time to do these sand-boxing activities. It not only gives them an opportunity to learn and develop new skills but many companies have had their employees develop some of their best products/solutions during these types of…

For company assets and data, there aren't any limits that are unreasonable when it comes to securing it. If your company has a BYOD policy and people are using those devices to access company data then the company should have the right to track those devices as well so long as the employee understands this up front. With…

Radioteacher I couldn't agree with you more. When I do any type of consulting for Orion I always tell people that NPM and SAM are the bread and butter of Orion.
-
Our PCI auditors said that as long as it was justified; restricted to only necessary ports and documented then it wasn't a problem. It also goes through NAT so technically is not on the same network. Your situation sounds like it may be a bit different thought.
-
njoylif this seems like a pretty reasonable request to me so I gave it my vote.
-
Nice post. What would be great is to have a tool such as NPM be able to perform that type of command and throw the output into a pop-up window much like SAM does with the real-time log viewer on Windows.
-
LOL, it's amazing you guys get any actual work done around there!
-
Unfortunately I think we are looking at having to bring in Splunk because of this issue.

For me it was Nightmare on Elm Street 3. I woke up in the middle of the night and wandered out into the living room, my mom was asleep on the couch and it was on so I sat there and watched it. Mom wasn't too happy in the morning when she found out.

I hate patching because at the end of the day when you are talking about having to patch 100's or more systems there just isn't any good way to do it. It's going to be a painful grind no matter what and there is a good chance something is going to break. The best part is you get to look forward to the whole thing again the…

Really looking forward to this event. LEM is a really fun product to work with!

Another aspect of the "push" model using the agent is security. You don't need to punch a hole through a firewall to get to a device on the other side and the agent encrypts it's traffic before sending it back to the monitoring system.
-
I couldn't agree more, especially with the "simplify" part. As IT people we often get carried away with the technology and fail to keep things simple when in almost all cases keeping this as simple as possible is best.
-
While I agree that having that level of monitoring in place is crucial, I also think that you should have experts on any technology that your company relies on. These experts can either be employees, contractors or VAR's but I still think you need people experts on the tech.
-
I was going to ask the exact same question, I actually went and checked to see if it was there.

It's a funny thing; our company was a very strong Solaris shop back when I started 16 years ago. Now we are 80% Windows and strongly aligned with Microsoft. Most of the changes happened as a result of what our clients were looking for.
-
Your explanation is certainly very different from what was generally publicized about HP's move with Helion. I think this is a great case of some good decisions poorly communicated and then mass media putting their own "spin" on it. Maybe HP should have you do more of their public communications because this makes a lot…

"Looks like a plumbing problem" = it's a network issue.
-
Well, I am planning to upgrade NPM to 11 first so lets hope that goes well!
-
tinmann0715 While I am and will continue to be a huge advocate for LEM, we finally had to start moving to Splunk because LEM wasn't supporting all of the log sources that we needed to support.
-
Our NCM implementation is primarily focused on configuration archival and auditing for the sake of maintaining standards. We have had NCM for a long time and our network team is just now beginning to look at more ways to leverage it for deployment automation in an attempt to replace old legacy systems we have used for that.

With Microsoft I have TechNet subscription which gives me access to all Microsoft products for lab purposes, this is the type of thing that I am looking for.
-
petergwilson I am really sorry to hear you are having such a bad experience with the 3rd party vendor you are working with. Any migration as big as what you are taking on is going to have it's challenges but working with an outside vendor should make the process easier, not more difficult. Are you in a position where you…
