We also use CommVault but we also use Azure Site Recovery (ASR).

I am confused; where is the GUI for these things? Ok, so I admit I am from a Windows world where Power Shell is finally putting some power back in the CLI. With that begin said, when I first entered the IT world it was on Unix and then Linux. I always had a huge respect for the folks that could quick throw together…

We have used Chef to do Azure deployments and it works great.
-
We are actually looking at how using Dameware Remote Support may fit into the new environment we are building out. Resolving the security concerns is probably the larges hurdle when you are working in environments that need to maintain security compliance for things such as HIPAA and PCI.

Thanks sja, I voted for your idea also as it can't hurt to get more exposure!
-
Thanks for the InfraGuard reference, I see they have a local chapter here but I have no idea how active they are. I will need to look into it.

We are more of a concierge service provider so just about every build we do is unique which has presented some challenges with automation. Due to these challenges most of what we do is manual process. I would be curious to hear about solutions others have come up with to solve some of these automation and scalability…

I have been preaching Configuration Management (or Fleet Management as I called it) for years and it hasn't really taken off yet as much as I would like. We do have NCM for our network devices though our Network Engineers have tended to shy away from it for reasons I don't understand. They spend hours doing manual audits…

Jfrazier I think we are on the same page here, that is what I was picturing!

Hey Jiri Cvachovec Is the upgrade process to this new version of NCM the same as previous versions? I assume it automatically handles all of the database migration bits on it's own in the background? I just want to make sure there aren't any special upgrade items I should be worried about before I move forward with this.…

Up until now we have been able to allow only work provided devices access to our internal networks and BYOD devices could only access public facing work resources. Unfortunately I fear that will be changing soon so it's nice to see how other folks are handling this.

My Review

Agreed, the return of Rob Boss was one of the best parts of THWACKcamp this year!
-
I would really love to be able to do this but we I have struggled with how to make it work in our environment. Unfortunately most of what we do isn't so black and white, or at least it doesn't seem that way to me. Because of this we have failed to create easy and automated workflows to offload seemingly simple tasks. Take…

You could go as far as to say "a hobo was saved due to the making of this product"!
-
Like you and many others here I started learning just by getting my hands dirty as well. I was also very fortunate to have two instructors that had the philosophy of "you are going to get plenty of theory in other college classes but if you don't know what a damn computer looks like it ain't going to matter" so they…

I first want to point out that I can't agree with you more that1guy15 regarding how trying to use custom stencils is nothing but a pain and I don't honestly feel that they add much value. In fact I am not a huge fan of Visio at all. I know that most people use Visio but i think it almost gives you too many options making…
-
All good points made! With all of that being said one thing I still like to see is simplicity, as much as can be possible while still meeting all of the other items that have been discussed. I say that because as technical people sometimes we get carried away with the design and add in unnecessary complexity which always…

I fully expect that the next time we see SolarWinds make any significant changes to Network Atlas it will be to leverage their new Apollo WebUI that both NetPath and PerfStack use to bring Network Atlas into the WebUI.
-
Awesome, thanks Jiri!

wabbott, do we receive a max of 500 points or do we receive 500 points for each category we submit under? Also, even if it is a max of 500 points, can we still submit under more than one category and possibly win? My apologies if this was already covered and I missed it somewhere.
-
I don't think there was ever a question of the technology working. Like Jfrazier asked; how is latency? How is control, the ability to monitor, and overall performance? I assuming this is with reference to using the Azure cloud or is this in reference to using Azure Pack internally?

I really like #2! All too often I see really important projects fail because folks are trying to take on too much and boil the ocean all at once.
-
Mario was originally punching his companion Yoshi in Super Mario World That is hilarious; I always thought he was punching Yoshi! I guess they didn't change it enough to be obvious it was just a gesture versus socking him in the head; then again the graphics were probably not good enough for it to be obvious.
-
I personally love #3! It's amazing how many issues I have found and resolved before they were noticeable just by finding deviations from a standard baseline. That type of visibility is critical.
-
I can't help but think our nations security is critical enough that maybe BYOD just shouldn't be a thing for any of our military or defense networks.
-
I think PerfStack is going to be awesome, it's basically a virtual whiteboard for troubleshooting!

When it comes to logging you certainly need the complete picture. Logging is also not a "set it and forget it" type of activity. The log system needs to be managed in perpetuity and you need to have trained people looking at the logs on a daily basis. Just like with anything else, the tool is only 20% of the solution; the…

Chances are it’s a lot more than you think. Studies find 70% - 80% of time in IT is spent keeping the lights on instead of moving the needle. It's funny you say this; our company just started having us Operations folks track our hours so they could to a KLO (Keep the Lights On) analysis to see how much of our time…

I am pretty sure there are companies out there that do this and outsourcing such a thing is probably best as it would help ensure that it's non-biased.
