  • I think this should be part of LEM since LEM is supposed to be a security appliance. Also, if LEM stands a chance to go up against it's competing products in it's space it's going to need to have a similar feature set and this is common amongst just about all of it's competitors.
  • @jfrazier; I like it, that's an even better way of doing it than I was thinking!
  • Wow Jfrazier, I all of a sudden have a whole different level of respect for you after having busted out that depth of knowledge on the subject!
  • Nice post adatole‌! I agree that no matter what if you want security you are going to need to enforce some level of control such as a VPN to create both encryption and a common entry point. I think it would be awesome for somebody to take the concepts in this post and create reference architecture for a secure and…
  • When I recently talked to some of the folks over at SolarWinds they indicated that they were aware of this issue and were planning to work on it.
  • I have found that some Business Services can't be directly monitored; it really depends on how the end Business Service is delivered. On the other hand if it's web based it's pretty easy to monitor. In the cases where it can't be monitored I add as much monitoring as I can to all of the different elements of it and put…
  • I think this is a great anology! I wish more folks would use more of a recipe when it comes to troubleshooting. Far too often I see people guessing at what they think the problem is and then taking a course of action based on that guess. Good troubleshooting should be more methodical than this starting with classifying the…
  • I used to accomplish this manually in Orion by opening graphs over the same time range in multiple windows and then trying to stack those windows on top of each other as to get the necessary data-correlation. I am super excited that with PerfStack I will no longer be having to do this!
  • Wow, this article totally describes a guy I used to work with. Every Month or so he would come to me and have me look at this new "thing" that he had created. He was always very proud of these creations that he felt were really going to somehow be helpful; however, in reality they almost never got used because they were…
  • I would agree, the new Customer Portal is totally awesome, great job!
  • I would be happy to have you explain in more detail offline; however, I will be leaving here soon so we would need to schedule that for tomorrow. I see how you are making that work for interfaces but that still doesn't make it clear to me how they are also able to see nodes in conjunction with just specific interfaces on…
  • sqlrockstar great post as always! One of the services we host is SQL and help our clients manage the SQL Server. It's not uncommon for us to have clients want us to change something with the SQL Server, give it more resources, or even blame the infrastructure for poor performance to try and avoid deadlocks versus taking…
  • While I think that is a good idea, it also has some downsides to it. Using the agent allows you to pull in other log files that are not necessarily associated with Windows that otherwise would be inaccessible. You would also loose the security and distributed load capabilities; the agent handles the normalization and…
  • Storage certainly is King! Production workloads on flash storage is a game changer no matter how you look at it. We are consistently blowing our clients away when we move their production workloads to flash. With that being said it's still important to not use it to mask other performance issues such as the ones you talk…
  • LOL, yeah from your response I can certainly tell you have been there and done that! It's a very frustrating position to be in.
  • DevOps is a frustrating topic for me because I just haven't had a very good experience with it. I realize that isn't to say DevOps is a bad thing, I really hope things turn around so I can have the good experience that I know could be possible with the proper communication.
  • One thing that is on the top of my mind is that as clout technologies grow and more use of the hyper-scalers (Azure, AWS, etc) become more common and technologies like micro-services and containers also become more common how does that change our monitoring to become more "outside in" such as this? With these types of…
  • The only difference now is that the cloud stack is one orchestrated organism rather than many more disparate silos to address individually. We are treating the cloud as though it's different in this regard but I would argue that it isn't. All of these things have always been all part of one organism. They may not have been…
  • Unfortunately based on the few number of votes here I am doubting it's likely that we will see this feature. That concerns me a bit as it may cause us to look for a different solution.
  • I have been using SolarWinds software for years and have always been a huge advocate so I am super happy to hear about you guys being a global market leader, you guys truly deserve it and I am proud to have been able to be a continued customer along the way. Way to go guys!
  • That's just pulling variables. I want to pull the value of custom pollers, and even SQL queries to outside databases for integration capabilities. Admittedly, I have not tried any of this recently but last time I did try these things were not possible.
  • I personally think having a separate network for IoT devices in the workplace is probably the best compromise. It provides nice separation and also gives you a nice demark that you can watch very closely for unusual behavior.
  • We really need this as well, this can't happen soon enough.
  • I think Security Certifications are often more expected from Network Engineers because historically security was more expected from the Network guys as the primary point of security was the firewall and IPS/IDS. As we move forward we need to start shifting this expectation to the entire team. The systems and applications…
  • I recently ran into a case with a client that was using their server as a terminal server and the Anti-Virus didn't protect against ransomware and they got infected. This resulted in an after-hour server re-build for me. The important take-away here is just because you have anti-virus doesn't mean it protects against…
  • We use WAF's but I am not on our network team so I don't work directly with them as a systems guy. Do the WAF's offer a service similar to a Threat Feed where it can receive constantly updated definitions?
  • I totally understand and agree with you. We are in the same boat as we are a service provider as well.
  • I think I need to start by noting that I find the image strangely disturbing thought I am not sure why. I think it's always great to get a second set of eyes on something or use somebody else as a sounding board as they may identify something obvious that you overlooked while in the weeds of the issue. I think you also…
  • Awesome, thanks again for the information! Our database is on all SSD storage so we should be good.
