Walmart Will Open Drive-In Theaters in Its Parking Lots This Summer I don't know about the rest of you, but I have a hard time believing that Walmart would dim their parking lot lighting enough for people to see a screen. The Dying Mall’s New Lease on Life: Apartments I don't know who would like living without external…

Something that scares me is people who have never tried restoring from a backup. I make a point to do this at least once every two months in a dev environment, just to make sure that everything is working properly. The test has failed EVERY TIME I HAVE DONE THIS AT A NEW JOB!

I really like AI because of the benefits available, but I also recognize that it's a two-edged sword with great potential for misuse. Therefore I would strongly support a stricter and global standard of ethics associated with the use of AI.

This is one of the most frustrating parts of security for me. You need to trust the people who have access, but you need to closely monitor what they do to make sure it isn't being abused and that monitoring doesn't communicate trust.

Every other time I have answered a question correctly I have received 150 points immediately. Today I didn't. Have others observed this?

I love my e-reader because I don't need another bookcase at home, and it makes moving a world easier, but I hate that I don't own the books I purchase. For music I will almost always buy CDs. If I buy digital music then I will burn a CD or two so I protect my purchases in case the vendor decides I no longer have a right to…

I wonder how detailed the logs are. Logs that aren't quite verbose will not show when software was added to a system. Logs that are this verbose will be difficult to review when you need to find an infection because they will be so large.

I wish I could get every decision maker to read the "business as usual" part!

Dungeons and Deadlines... Thank you for giving me another time vampire!

The article about Uber explained exactly what I thought about Uber, with more detail and eloquence than I could have provided. Thanks for sharing!

I've really enjoyed some of the poetry I ave seen in the comments.

Never stop learning is great advice.

It seems like a lot of work but, having been there, I don't think it really is.

Interesting summary, but I think observation also needs to be a part of security. If someone is accessing data they shouldn't, it's a big red flag that something is wrong.
-
I was going to bring this up, but you beat me to it.

As a private pilot there is no way I would ever trust a self-flying vehicle. I have had too many experiences where there is no warning of turbulence or where weather develops too quickly for ADS or XM weather to warn me before I would get into it. My eyes and judgement keep me safe and I don't have confidence that a…

* Buy an Oculus Quest * Prevent everyone from answering question 20 so nobody qualifies for the drawing * Conclude someone has to take it home * Give an awesome Christmas present I'm kidding, of course, but the thought appealed to my sense of humor.

When disposing of old hard drives I use a DoD 5220.22-M compliant wipe and don't believe anybody is going to retrieve useable data after seven pseudo-random wipes. With notebook hard drives I can buy cheap USB enclosures to repurpose them instead of destorying them and buying other external hard drives.

For small businesses I think PAAS is an excellent choice. Not needing your own servers, not worrying about your own backups, and the ease of remote access simplify the job for IT reducing the cost of on-site or outsourced support. I don't quite understand HCI well enough to know if PAAS can be part of HCI or not, but it…

"In my role as an architect for enterprise customers, I don’t like conversations in which the quote for the equipment is the only concern." In my experience managers are far too concerned with price, often willing to sacrifice performance for cheap.

Every job that can be automated eventually will be automated. I have a friend who is a truck driver and sees no reason to look at other job opportunities. But I am convinced that computers will be driving trucks before he is ready to retire, forcing him out of the job. And software development is not immune; I know people…

The people problem is the biggest problem. Users who can't be bothered to put their password anywhere other than a Post-It on their monitor, managers who don't want to bother their staff with security, IT pros who are so overworked that they don't have time to patch systems and train users.

I've installed a 30-day trial then, on the 30th day, called in for a 30-day temporary license. The salespeople are usually accommodating, and I've found that 60 days have been enough for testing.

I had a hard time choosing the right answer. Where was the hint?

Training helps with the carelessness aspect, but I still think that jobs need to be risked when someone is repeatedly careless after training. I've seen too many cases where security isn't taken this seriously and bad things happen.

This didn't happen to me; if it did I would be looking for a new career. https://www.reddit.com/r/WTF/comments/9n9gbm/i_think_i_downloaded_the_wrong_version_of_python/

Government is actively trying to turn the US into a surveillance state, and any promises about how collected data will be used are empty promises.
-
This applies outside of government as well. It is scary how easily people can fail to be a line of defense, giving away network access or their credentials to unauthorized users.

The frequency with which we hear of high profile breaches suggests that it isn't just federal agencies that underfund IT security. I don't think I would want to work in the health care field because of how bad the fines can be when breaches happen, and how often admins are punished because their best with the very limited…

Sometimes I think every IT person in North America should take a two hour lunch break at the same time. Obviously this would require coordination across several time zones, some people would have a very late lunch, and some would have a very early lunch. When nobody is keeping things running for two hours the whole world…
