I'm happy to see this conversation taking place. I've long believed that the age of specialization is trending downward. That's not to say that people don't have nor shouldn't have some specialty, but that a person should not define their career by a specialty. I advise technologists to leverage their specialty but pivot…

Lubo, I started in on this from our side. Will forward you the case #.

I'd be interested to discuss and white board ideas with you if you are up to it. It seems to me that simply having the ability to filter the SQL tab under TRENDS for only blocking wait types might go a long way here. Does that make sense to you? Because anytime blocking is occurring, you are accumulating blocking wait…

Thanks for contributing the feature request chrisren!

There was a patch release earlier this year. So no major release for this year yet.

Hey dmclean, sorry for the delay in responding. Were you talking about NPM and NCM when you said your SQL admin tried? For questions specific to NPM or NCM, I think you may want to use a different forum. I've posted a couple forums below that may be where you should go. rob.hock may be able to better guide you. Thanks!…

Great suggestions Jim. I wonder if you would be available for a call to discuss this idea. I'm very interested to hear how we can make your conversations with storage admins and vendors easier.
-
Thanks. That is a neat idea.

Precisely sqlrockstar! How fitting is this image I found today?

I wonder if this is something that would interest you :

@Michelle, Great idea!
-
You've got an excellent point cmartin2. Blindly adding suggested indexes is not a good idea. Thanks for contributing! Hope to see you around on THWACH! :-)
-
deedsd, Good suggestion. That sounds like it could be very useful indeed. Thanks!
-
Thanks oduvaldo! Keep the feature requests coming.

I'm just going to leave this here... :-) Beta News : Adding a Databases tab to Orion!
-
I like this idea deedsd!
-
The Beta program is over. Unfortunately company policy prohibits me from promising dates. I can only say that we strive to do two releases a year.
-
layfnatu2, I think I understand what you are asking for. Let me know if you don't think I've captured it correctly. I would describe it as the ability to simultaneously filter and pivot wait time by multiple dimensions. Kind of like using an Excel pivot table to query an SSAS cube.
-
Craig may be referring to Orion rather than Database Performance Analyzer.

I'm very glad to have gotten to know him at 2014 VmWorld. He sure was a wealth of knowledge and experience. My condolences to his family, including all of the Solarwindsers like Patrick Hubbard.

Understandable. Thanks for reaching out to us here. You have some good ideas for us to consider! :-)
-
Thanks for pointing that out. We'll dig them out when we're tallying votes. :-)
-
Hi Chad, thanks for inquiring. It's there! We added NetApp support to Storage Resource Monitor in version 6.0. See this blog post for more info on SRM 6.0: Dreams Come True - Storage on Orion is now in Release Candidate!
-
Thanks Richard. I had fun writing this and am glad others appreciate this real world problem. It's NOT always the database, but you are guilty until proven innocent. :-)
-
The SRM Profiler module has very broad and deep functionality but it was not the best way forward into our AppStack vision. It will be around for quite a while as the SRM Orion module builds array support. This should be similar to the VMAN integration/migration. We're 3 major releases and 2 years into that and we still…

ryanjlind, that's a good idea. I totally understand your purpose and am glad you submitted it here so others can vote on it. I think most of us DBAs have done the before my magic, after my magic presentation. :-) Thanks for contributing your idea!

My answer : This is a work harder vs smarter question. Nobody cares how hard you work as long as the job gets done satisfactorily. In the decade I managed SQL Servers, I found that CPU utilization is not immediately relevant to performance. It's immediately relevant to capacity planning. My users never cared what…

Nice post sqlrockstar. I always tell people that traces are vulnerable to "The Observer Effect" because the load a trace adds may change the outcome and thus mask the problem. Sampling/polling has much less effect.

I agree with you Charles. A good DBA is worth their weight in gold. Sadly, many organizations don't realize that value until they've accumulated technical debt standing in their way of solving performance problems. Those situations can be too little and too late. I once had a DBA job where they'd never had a DBA before.…
