Thanks for the write up!

I'm all for this. Before I moved a few years back I lived in a Michigan lake shore community and near the bike path. There were three small towns all linked together and off road as well as on road bike paths available to get about anywhere. Due to the large amount of tourist traffic and difficulty in parking I rode my…

Nice Job Leon. And I was only using my PI for playing some old retro gaming favorites

There are a lot of devices that still contain data even if you assumed they were 'wiped'. For example, a copy machine will still have the last page copied on the platen, a fax machine can have many pages queued up in memory, It's not financially feasible to 'wipe' a PC/server etc. Just too much risk involved when the fines…

Very good comment and made me laugh I have found it just as many times to be bad code, slow SQL server, storage issues, etc.. the list goes on and on but... the one the one thing that happens more times than less is what I call 'Cowboys and the Wild Wild West' You you have many teams doing network, server, SQL, storage,…

Thanks for the write up. Almost all of them (not Security Guards) use Syslog, SNMP Traps, Email, or write to logs.

I'm hoping they will add some additional browsers soon. Some sites are strictly created for mobile browsers so it would be nice to have a couple more options.

Personally I love 'StayCations'. Last summer I took a week off and put in a 50' by 50' rose bed for the wife. It was beautiful all summer and now for many years we can enjoy it. While it was work, it wasn't my normal 'work' work so I found it quite enjoyable and relaxing.

Thanks for the write up! "Invest in Physical Security" I still think physical security is one of the most overlooked items. How many times have you found a door to one of your telephone closets propped open of left a cabinet unlocked?

Kindle and Nook readers: You know you don’t own those books, right? There's so many free books out on Amazon, plus all the ebooks you can get from the online libraries I'm never going to run out of digital reading material. If there is one I really need I'll just get a hard copy. You can get a lot of them used at a…

Wow Leon, a lot of dialog on directions. You always do great write ups and I would love to hear what you have your compass set on!

@ rschroeder its definitely apples and orangutans. All of the logging engines have different plus and minus points. Fortunately Logwatch is Open Source Logwatch download | SourceForge.net , LEM has free training as well as a free trial, and Splunk has smallish a free license available. Your best bet is to stand up a lab of…

I've been pretty happy with Solarwinds offerings over the years. It gets the job done most of the time. Now... I have had sales people try to tell me their tool does 'everything' then when I look at it deeper it does nothing 'out of the box'.

Thanks for the articles!

Great write up, thanks you! I wish I could round out our bundle. Data Center Monitoring with Network Performance Monitor, Network Configuration Manager, Virtualization Manager and Storage Resource Monitor

Great post! I definitely learned a few new tricks On my most recent upgrade I ran into issues and had to call support. Worked with a great guy Leon (short name) and he provided a script that would uninstall SolarWinds completely from the server so you had a 'clean' server to work with. This allowed us to try several…

Falsehoods programmers believe about Unix time I'm having second thoughts after reading this...

That is an awesome cable job. Back in the day we had a few engineers that would 'banjo string' cables across our Cisco 5500's and then eventually a card failure would occur. Then they would have to label 100's of cables and take the entire network core down to replace the card. It only took once or twice and their cabling…

Yes, that takes several minutes off the install. I do notice they take several minutes to 'unzip' or whatever they are doing during the install. Wish this could be done ahead of time as well. Since its done on every server the time adds up if you have several servers and this prolongs our down time. Hopefully our budget…

Great write up The same happens with monitoring tools between teams as well.

Drunk shoppers spend $48B per year while intoxicated, mostly on Amazon "I had a friend that once hit his head so hard he forgot ordering $800 worth of beer making supplies." Well, once you get your $800 worth of beer making supplies your probably going to be doing a lot more shopping in the future...

Anyone have a work around for this? I would like to have my syslogs appear in the advanced alert console
