This is great information. Especially, as cbussard@idealintegrations.net mentioned, for the server power saving settings nugget. I am shocked the number of clients that I visit that either don't know they exist or simply stay with the default settings.

Thanks for this post. These are all great points. Although I am pretty well versed, I try to avoid labelling myself as a DBA. However, i recently had a client for whom I had created a number of custom SQL/SWQL resources/alerts/reports ask me if I was interested in a DBA position.

I think the key is being able to correlate IT metrics to a potential business impact. And vice versa, being able to troubleshoot a "business impact" by knowing which IT metrics to look at.
-
I think that application/hypervisor level replication is going to be the way of the future.

I suppose we have to master time travel to get the points, lol: Posted by Wendy Abbott in Announcements on Jul 4, 2016 2:04:40 AM Make sure you submit your answers by Sunday, July 3rd, to receive the points I know NetPath is pretty awesome and allows us to see outside of our network, but does it allow us to see outside of…

I've never given any thought to mobile web monitoring. But, I do agree with others that it will only become more and more important.

Great information. Thanks for the post

maria.bungau - It seems like I am in the same boat as others in that I only received roughly half of the points for the January mission. I answered every question correctly.

I agree with what others have said, just because the link utilization was only 20% doesn't mean the user wasn't truly experiencing a performance issue. To me, that would just be the starting point of the troubleshooting.

This is the number one thing I deal with on a weekly basis with clients - figuring out how to slow the deluge of alerts into a meaningful trickle.

I'm curious to see how Solarwinds is going to leverage their purchase of Pingdom as it relates to WPM. With that, they will have both sides of this discussion covered with WPM internally and Pingdom for cloud based website monitoring.

I think it will still boil down to the quality of the level 1 technicians. With a previous employer, we had very precise, well documented workflows. Yet, I couldn't tell you the number of times I was called in the middle of the night for a non-critical issue that had a clear workflow to wait until the next business day.…

I am going to respond based on my previous position as this does not directly apply to me currently: 1) In my previous positions, I always worked for huge organizations (like 90,000 employees minimum), so, yes, the teams were always extremely silo'd. 2) Most of my certifications revolve around the server side:…

No it is not. Even if you do not have LEM, you can use Solarwinds' interactive demo: http://lem.demo.solarwinds.com/lem/

To exacerbate to finger pointing even more, throw in separate companies. I used to work for an outsourcing company as a server/virtualization engineer. However, the company I was contracted to kept the networking and storage teams in-house. So, any time a questionable issue came up, it was no longer finger pointing between…

Before NCM, everything was just saved as a bunch of text files.

Real good information here.

Good topic.

I long ago gave up any expectation of privacy. The way I look at it is that you have to weigh the benefit of of the discounts or benefits you are receiving against the value of your personal information. As an expample, I was once in one of the big discout retailers (the one with the red bullseye) with a relative and she…

As I mentioned in a previous ambassador post, I used to work for a company where the different teams were actually different companies in an outsourcing arrangement. That led to a lot of finger pointing when it came time to do an RCA. To add to the frustration, there was no central NMS on which to rely for data.

Is it just me, or was there no bonus this week? I could be mistaken, but I don't remember seeing it on the results page for any of the three challenges.
-
Working without virtualization monitoring simply results in being reactive instead of having the opportunity to be proactive.
-
It is so nice when I get to work with a client that has this vs. having to be confined to just a small whiteboard.

Wishes, as in be careful what you wish for? Genies? Magic?

Like byrona, I don't have a real strong InfoSec background. So, this series has been a great learning experience for me. Thanks!

I just ordered a pair. Kind of rolling the dice since there are next to no details about them. But, we'll see what they are when they come in.

Most of my clients are, similar to the OP, not full time SW admins. I think it is awesome to have a monitoring solution that is easy to get running and easy to learn and, yet, is so powerful and customizable.
-
As someone who implements Orion for numerous clients, I concur with what @craig schnarrs said, specifically as it relates to hardware monitoring. It is not uncommon at all to identify a dozen or more hardware issues that clients had no idea existed prior to installing portions of the Orion suite.

This whole series has been excellent. Thanks for your contribution, glenkemp!

Thanks Jfrazier, robertcbrowning, and u1976turn! Now only if it would arrive before Christmas.
