Actually, a little animated SolarWinds "fire guy" built off your logo would be pretty cool. Give him a name and personality like Geico has with their Gecko but uniquely suited to SolarWinds and you'd have a winner. Sell it to your Marketing guys and get them to offset part of the development costs for text-to-speech >…

Andy, Actually, it does re-create at the Polling cycle, but in the meantime, a couple of Alerts are fired within the poll window; IP SLA Operation Down and VoIP Infrastructure Node Down since we're checking the voice stuff every minute for the Alerts. Trying to avoid false alarms.... I could probably edit the Alerts to…

Actually, I came up with a cheesy way for this to work. (but no British accent) If your server has a functional audio chipset and the sound drivers installed, you can trap the Speaker Out or Line Out to a wireless transmitter, then attach the receiver to the audio in of the display with your Alert or Event View on it. The…

DOH! Of course, that makes perfect sense. I'll get with Network and advise them we need to modify our prodecures for the rollout of VoIP to update the startup configs via CiscoWorks or individually to reflect the IP SLA setup. Thanks!

SW Support has sent a patch for my Pollers that I will be applying at COB today. My hope is that this corrects the issue. I will look at the system in the morning with fingers crossed..... FYI.....

Opened ticket #130653 this morning. We had missing and/or false alarms this morning and the huge number of outstanding polls. I had done a "shutdown everything" via Service Manager on both Pollers Friday night, but the issue remained this morning, so I opened the ticket. I did a Windows restart on all the servers this…

Warbird, Hoped you'd reply as it sounded like we had similar issues...inheriting a "broken" installation. It's all 32-bit OSes, and I know having the SQL DB on a VM instance is NOT recommended, absolutely. I am going to recommend they move the DB to a standalone server, go to Server 2003 Enterprise, increase RAM to 8 or…

Hi guys... I have an 9.5SP4 installation with all the SPs and HotFixes. The 2nd Poller is running 2114 Nodes, 3113 Interfaces, 282 Volumes, 5509 Total Elements. I had used the Polling Tuner and set it to the "Recommended" settings, 100/36. I just finished setting up over a dozen Alerts for network nodes based on location,…

Thx! (avatar) Did open a ticket, actually, and working to a solution. :o)

No...not in the docs that I could find. I did Poller Balancing and moved the SLA targets to the Main NPM server where IP SLAM is running and viola!, everything runs like a dream. Oh, one thing we overlooked in our process steps for your Cisco targets. (in our case, 2811 routers for VoiP use) We used IP SLAM to create the…

I got a similar call from our COO this morning, looking at a key server's stats. Here's what we seeing: His question was "what are the gaps; are we missing data?" I don't see a lot of outstanding ICMP or SNMP polls, and I've done Poller Tuning, so this is a mystery. Also, the Orion Pollers are local to the servers, so…

Hi...jumped in here to describe an odd thing we had this morning with our VoIP UDP Jitter Operations. Right now, we only have 42 Operations created because our VoIP is just starting roll-out. Phoenix, Houston, and Calgary are connected to HQ as well as a local store about 3 miles from HQ we're using as a field test…

You're welcome! One of the reasons I insisted on moving from Windows Server 2003, x32 to 2008, x64 was the improved TCP/IP stack on '08 and "auto tuning". My hope was that I'd get better network performance which might mitigate some of the issues of running in a VM environment. I hope to run some WireShark caps before I…

Hi! I have (inherited) an existing NPM 9.5 SP4 installation. The system is: NPM Server: Server 2003 SE, 3Ghz Xeon, 4GB RAM SQL Server: Server 2003 SE, 3Ghz Xeon, 4GB RAM, on VMWare instance, with other SQL DBs besides NetPerfMon running. 2nd Poller: Server 2003 SE, 3Ghz Xeon, 4GB RAM NPM, NTA, VOiP, Network Atlas, and APM…

Craig, The short answer is yes. That would be useful. Being able to route text-to-speech outputs to the web console would be even better. Right now, our Trigger Actions for some critical applications in APM send e-mail and/or pages, for instance. We use the "Insert Variables" to place specific data in the mail or page.…

Denny, Got it working....thanks.

Actually, I installed 9.5.1 last Wednesday (1/27) and had no apparent issues until this morning. Now, I"m seeing this, even after Service stop/start AND a complete system restart. What the heck is this about?
-
While I absolutely agree about NOT running the Orion SQL DB on a VM, I've recently had to do just that. I was hired to "fix" a broken installation, so I've had to work within some constraints. The system has: 2288 Nodes 4147 Interfaces 307 Volumes 6742 Total Elements being managed along with APM, NTA, and IP SLA running on…

Mark, While the method you describe works, it seems pretty limited. I can (and probably will) create some "custom" WAV files, but there's no method to associate them with a specific alert unless I create an Advanced Alert with a Trigger Action. If I do that...Advanced Alert with a Trigger Action of "Play A Sound", where…

Case is open and we have a handle on the issues. Details referenced in another thread here. :o)

Peter, Thanks...that's about what I figured. The method you describe is certainly workable.

Denny, Windows Pass-Through Security questions: I have my NPM, SQL 2005, and 2nd Poller running on Server 2008. My Additional Web Console is on a Server 2003 machine, aliased as "Orion" in our internal DNS. Everyone logs in to the Web Console. In reading Appendix E in the Admin Guide, it says "see Page 81" which then…

For APM 4 / NPM 10, it'd be nice to extend "Unmanage" to include maintenance windows. By that, combine devices, interfaces, and application components into a single form that would enable "unmanaged - down for maintenance, upgrade, replacement, etc." for each and every item on the form. Any alerts, etc. for the affected…

UPDATE: Rebuilt the primary NPM Server with Server2008 x64, 8GB of RAM. The SQL Server was rebuilt, also Server2008, x64, and 8GB of RAM. SQL Server 2005 with NO other DBs on this machine. (Previous installation was sharing the server with 6 other DBs). Kept the existing 2nd Poller and Additional Web Server machines…

The update is that the NetPerfMon DB is a nice golden brown....as in toast. I was unable to unmanage a single Application Component, much less the 4172 configured. We're having a meeting to discuss rebuilding the entire system with sufficient resources on Monday. I've asked our excellent SW Support contact on the open case…

I'd LOVE to have an APM cookbook! I'm comfortable with the module, but I would like to see some "real world" examples, especially for complex applications residing on multiple servers. Right now, I'm using (and modifying) the included and some shared templates for Exchange, Blackberry Enterprise Server, UX monitors, Active…

David, Did what you suggested, and got an error when I tried to Preview. ERROR RECEIVED:The Orion website is currently unable to display this page. Orion polling and alerting services often continue running, though this page cannot be displayed. Please take the following steps to attempt to alleviate the issue:* Log in to…

Thanks! I'll check when I get to the office and proceed from there.

UPDATE: I was able to import the "old" maps in Network Atlas w/o a problem. Indeed, the node IDs are off...placing our Lindsay, Oklahoma location where the Casper, Wyoming location is...but correcting the map is no problem compared to recreating 20 maps and submaps from scratch for > 500 locations. Thanks!

Roger, Thanks! We knew the old associations would be invalid, but it'll be a lot easier to update as opposed to recreating from zero!
