Short of editing the ASP code, the cheap and nasty way to do this, is right click on the node or interface and select "open in new window". You can also hold down the shift key while clicking on the link to open it in a new Window. Then your map stays open, and you get a new window for the details of whatever you have…

I created a menu item called "reports" with 3 columns. Each column has multiple groups/headers for different report groups. E.G. Column 1 - Availability Reports Header 1 - Routers Header 2 - Switches Header 3 - Servers Column 2 - Utilization Reports Header 1 - Routers Header 2 - Switches Header 3 - Servers Column 3 -…

This would definitely have saved us a lot of money. We just purchased a whack of distributed sniffers and taps to find out what is causing the events seen by Orion. Admitted, this does give us far more visibility and troubleshooting capabailites than Netflow, but we may have gotten by with Netflow as a start. These…

Well it's been almost 2 years now since I've been asking for CatOS Catalyst Switch port description discovery. Once again I have been let down by Ver 7.1 It seems as though this will never be implemented, even though I have done the MIB walk and sent the MIB to Solarwinds Development. It appears as though this product will…

Sounds like SNMP permissions on the devices you are polling. Make sure the devices allow SNMP polling from the new server(IP). Also check to make sure your community strings are still OK on the new server. There is a small utility called SNMPing, which can check SNMP access to your devices. www.sans.org/.../ -=Cheers=- NG

JS, 1) You can do this in a crude way, by setting the statistics polling to whatever time interval you want, on an individual node and/or interface basis. We poll ours every 15 minutes, which seems to give very good results with no "false alarms". 2) I have set alerts for individual switch port status on our Cisco…

There was a version of Visio that could do this for you, but I'm not sure it's still available, now that Bill Gates owns Visio. -=Cheers=- NG
-
Yes, you can make it say anything you want for just a single node. -=Cheers=- NG

I'd have to agree with Gonzajoh, application monitoring is a nice to have feature, but is not really what Orion is all about. My number one request is still having the port descriptions for Cisco Cat switches show up in Orion just as the router interface descriptions do. Editing each port with a server's name is very time…

The IP Address Management tool can be set to update (publish to a web server) at preset intervals, such as every 5 minutes. Which specific app are you referring to? What version of Toolset are you running? This functionality was enhanced in the latest versions. -=Cheers=- NG

It is possible, but it is kind of cludgy. It requires manually editing the DB, as per Don Yonce's reply in the following post: www2.solarwinds.net/.../topic.asp -=Cheers=- NG

I believe the polling engine stops writing to the database during nightly maintenance. Even compacting/re-building the table indexes stops the polling engine, since it can't write to the database during this time. -=Cheers=- NG

quote:Originally posted by rwbuckn quote:Originally posted by Network_Guru You may need to tune your polling engine. Download and install the Polling Engine tuning tool. How much do you trust the tuner? I've been told by SW support not to use that tool. In fact when I do the math manually, I come out with a number of 69…

You may need to tune your polling engine. Download and install the Polling Engine tuning tool. The default Maximum 8 polls per second is most likely too low for polling devices that frequently. You can also see the polling statistics under: File>Polling Status You might be polling too frequently if you have any large…

Ian, You can use the Cisco "snmp Trap-Source" command to specify the interface to use for SNMP queries. I believe ICMP uses the actual loopback IP as the source. -=Cheers=- NG

Tony, This is a long time coming, but here is one way to customize the node-details page; Rather than creating login accounts for every device, you can add a URL to the customized info, to a Custom Property - "Dox" You can then display this Custom Property on the Node Details page using the…

Somehow this post ended up on the wrong thread. It should be in this thread: www2.solarwinds.net/.../topic.asp I don't know about searching from IE, but I just recently discovered the new "search nodes" feature which has been added to V7, thanks to iunderwo in this post: www2.solarwinds.net/.../topic.asp This is found…

ERB, Here is how I did it. Login to the web site as admin, and make sure you have "Allow Advanced Customization" turned on in the Settings page. Select "Customize Views", from the list I selected "Node Details" > edit. Then Select (check) "Node Detail Reports" > User defined Properties Hit "submit" and on the next page hit…

Thanks Isaac! This post was 3 posts away from the answer... I am currently looking at some way to send the user login timestamps from our dial-in router via AAA acounting logging to our syslog server - it is do-able for VOIP CDR's: www.cisco.com/.../cdr_logging.html Since all I'm after are timestamps, this might work for…

Hey Jim, Have you checked out the other Posts in the Forum? Some of these features (port monitoring, custom MIBs)have been requested & are currently in development. Try doing a search for "Custom MIBs" www2.solarwinds.net/.../topic.asp (see the last 2 pages for recent discussions on custom MIBs) The disabling the interface…

Right click on the map in Mapmaker and select properties. Just select the first option, and then make sure you have limited their account in the Web Admin page to only have access to the remaining device. -=Cheers=- NG

It really depends on how important the data is to you. I use simple recovery mode for this exact reason, but then again I'm running my DB on a Raid 0 array. I'm willing to lose up to 24 hours of data (back to the last nightly backup). I believe my DBA has also setup the DB to backup to a flat file every few hours. It's all…

Yup, this is a piece of cake now that there is a custom property editor. Just add a tag (comment) for each device you want to group. Then filter the webviews based on this tag. I have a 3 level filter - First Region(Province) then Building(address) & finally Device type(Cisco, Windows, HP, etc.). It makes it much easier to…

Actually there is a newer version 7.2.2 out now which should resolve the issue of missed polls and nodes going into warning state, as well as false alerts. I haven't installed it (7.2.2) yet, but as for the install procedure, just read the release notes. If it doesn't mention anything about un-installing the previous…

It uses a database to store the info for as long as you want, or MSDE 2Gb file size limit, whichever comes first. -=Cheers=- NG

Also do a ping scan of the subnet(s) you are mapping right before you run the mapper. This will ensure the ARP table of the router you are using for L3 is fully populated. -=Cheers=- NG

Yes, you can do this with Custom Property Editor. You can filter/group the Web Page based on any custom property. -=Cheers=- NG ~seek & ye shall find---> [url="http://www4.solarwinds.net/SolarWindsForum/search.asp"] <---no need to wait for answers~

I'm still on 7.6, so I have not seen this issue. All I can suggest is to contact SW support & see if this has been corrected in 7.8. -=Cheers=- NG

What version are you running? There's a bug in 7.7, which I thought was fixed in 7.8? www2.solarwinds.net/.../topic.asp -=Cheers=- NG

I'm not sure if this is what you are looking for, but here goes. I am using the pre-built report to create the following report: "Average & Peak Traffic Rates - WAN links - This Month - weekly" Time Frame is set to "this month" & summarization is set to "weekly". Here is the SQL query which is created by Report Writer:…
