I guess you can't floss while sitting in an airliner at 360mph then.... Maybe he should have been using a toothpick.

yep....

Couldn't make it either....stuck between coasts. The Apple thing though is interesting. It may make a difference in marketability for them in the future. Their pricey-ish product may become even more pricey.

Isn't that next weeks Friday question ?

These are the same arguments made over the last 30+ years as to have a hosted data center so you don't have the headaches and team to support/patch/upgrade hardware and software. Many of those managed service providers still exist (CSC, IBM, Atos/Origin, HP, etc.). Today it is easier to farm out bits and pieces and parts…

My wife has had no involvement in my audio quality choices....when we got married she didn't understand the reason for the big Denon A/V receiver I had or the Infinity speakers I had "everywhere". It was too complicated. I won't even go into the subwoofer.. I got her a set of fairly decent JBL wireless earbuds for…

can you see the device at the other end of the circuit ? Can you ping something on the other end that will not be available when that circuit is down ?

likely too late but I did it.

Ah the cloud aka "the fog". It is definitely well embedded in the hype train as we shift back to the earlier days of IT and Time Shared contracts for spare cycles and the days of hosted web services. It is nothing but the modern rebranded and remarketed concepts of yesteryear granted with newer…

You list of reasons should apply to all of IT.

You need to read it a bit more closely with regard to the perspective of the question..... You are referencing deployment of the product....not what the question was asking.

In a past life we moved from solaris as well. It was a cost thing for both hardware and OS licensing. I like solaris and would likely run a copy on a x86 machine for fun...but I can do more, have more software available, and more cheaply on linux these days...

dial up modems haven't died, if you use some standalone ATM's with "cell phone" access you can still hear a modem negotiate and connect. portable communication while it has changed format is still RF (radio frequency) based. Transmitter and receiver. Part of the reason Fax doesn't die is that is an accepted transmission of…

While this is a rehash of what has been a thing in the private sector for quite a while now... A takeaway that was not mentioned is that many hackers can devote many more hours a day than your typical IT employee. Think of it like that dog you have that is always finding away out of the fenced yard. The dog has all day to…

Good read and rschroeder makes some valid points.... On those points, if there was an undocumented change (no change ticket and not following the change process) then it could potentially cost someone their job. So in the perspective of the "story teller" it could still involve a conference room meeting that for someone…

Agreed...drysuit is the way to go for cold water activities.

Ah...but you have to sleep sometime. Just be glad it is not like the device Arnold had up his nose in Total Recall.

The older bigger companies have more capitol invested and the experience to keep things going...the startups are just that...newbies without the experience and capitol. So the question is, where is your best gamble ? Pay to play or cheap out and risk losing your data ?

And we're off !

Okay..Kudo's to all three of you mrs.alterego , DanielleH , and maria.bungau for all of your excellent work !!

sqlrockstar, again a great list of articles to read. The second one about "the top 5 reasons your application will fail" and your underlying comment about crappy code and agile os an excuse to be sloppy is spot on !!

Good points...although the person working the level 2 and 3 tickets should not be handling the level 1 help desk support issues. Leave those for the help desk analysts. They should be taking first crack at tickets anyway. If your shop is small, have the 2 or 3 help desk analysts swap out who is taking the level 2 or 3…

Alerting is like a firehose... You want drink from the garden hose but be careful in that you may be asking for 5" LDH....

Hmm.. I hate workaround where you lose historical data. It defeats the purpose of keeping it for trending and capacity planning purposes.

I was having this discussion with adatole in chat yesterday. So at least we have a head geek pinged on the topic.
