interesting that some people differentiate scripting and coding... Even scripting is coding although usually for simple tasks or repeatable batch operations. While something like perl or rexx are considered scripting languages, I have seen some rather elaborate programs spanning over 1000 lines of code. Perl is great in…

And we do live vicariously through you on these postings....

Google and quantum computing.... The line "the claim has sparked a bunfight" made me chuckle. I think they need to come up with "standard" with which quantum computing is based upon. Similar to the Turing test for artificial intelligence.

Ahhh...so that's what happened to RadioShack after they built their new campus around 2005 and filled the new building with them. Those were nice chairs... The FAF was rather low though.

I prefer the mib browser, it allows you to see the mib definition as well as the data. A mib walk may not provide you all the data you need, for example, some bits of mib data (citrix related) are not populated until you read a specific OID. So order of operation is important. A mib walk may not provide that for you...

Be sure you thaw your turkey first...There is nothing like the incredible exploding turkey.

The solution I had in a prior life to the point solutions rolling up to the MOM was a "unified message structure". It was based upon a MSGID or message ID structure from the mainframe world. It allowed for certain defined standard message structures to exist for 80+% of the event traffic from point solutions to be handled…

This be used to define maintenance windows, used when a job start/ends, and in many ways help to extend the capabilities of the product. It helps to address some of the areas where Orion is deficient. Some things that are monitored are somewhat abstract in nature. A log event is a transient thing that may not produce a…

That sort of thing has been needed for a long time and is further complicated when you have to change devices. Using an account id associated with the port and a data warehouse could get you want you need for historical purposes.…

Granted, most art does require a little science. It is the application of the science that makes it art.

I had to re-read your post ecklerwr1, originally it looked like you said Kong is on the speaker circuit now. My first thought was, "what is his impedance ?". Silly middle aged eyes.

While we no longer use NCM, I have found your topics interesting and insightful.

Ughh..SAP. I know of some companies that over a decade later their SAP implementation is still incomplete. I know of a company that went live with a SAP implementation on a given date even though it wasn't ready because management said it would happen....

That was an expensive lesson for someone...it was even more humurous in that the manager over procurement that made the choice was also in charge of facilities and was the one who unplugged the unmarked cord. Karmic relief in action

Interesting thought... While I have always worked in a dedicated monitoring team and at times in past lives have had to put monitoring in for certain potentially dubious actions, it is not totally out of scope. If done properly, HR can update a file with a list of id's or names and monitoring picks it up on the fly...of…

bummer...been there..done that. Will likely have it happen again.

I have passed these 2 links along to our newb's as a point of reference. Hopefully they will provide some feedback. Thanks for all the work !!
