I like to operate by the 80/20 rule. Build the simple stuff to handle 80% of the situations. One off's for the other 20% that are not able to fall into the 80% portion. That allows for a more overall simple approach that is scalable but allows for the other solutions where needed.

When I hear "you work in computers don't you...." my reply is no.. I watch them from a distance which throws off their questioning. Then while they are trying to figure out what I mean I run away

Throw in growth, lot's of growth, software upgrades (VM madness) which allows for putting servers out there faster than you can manage them, OS upgrades, clones to add capacity, new servers for new business services, etc. Tying ITSM (change management) into the process to track, promote and decommission IP addresses…

Dress that bug up and call it an undocumented feature.

Interesting list... I may have to find a copy of "The Black Swan". There are several others that have possibilities...although most of my de-coupling seems to be science fiction/fantasy related.

I like it when I get Dez to go Hmmmm.....

"After all, IT as a whole works best when teams interface and collaborate with each other." This is a very true statement. Not quite in topic, regarding anti-virus, make sure that your deployment server does not automatically deploy new pattern files...they have to be tested before release to the enterprise. I hate it when…

Yep, the hint is not found....but the answer should be fairly obvious.

sounds like they are running a mesh network...or at least mesh like to account for terrain and such.

Agreed, trust and security is a big deal. I personally have an issue with moving data off-premise. Once in the cloud, always in the cloud...because someone else has held your info.
-
there is a plug-in for some browsers called ghostery that lets you know what tracking cookies a website wants to place on your computer...and allows you to block them.

Well put adatole !

That is where things like google, samsung, apple pay work well. I know the samsung pay isolates you from the direct transaction stream. With that there is no card to swipe...harder for the criminals to skim data.

hopefully it is a medal count and not a medical count based on some of the conditions...

Well it was a workaround if you don't mind a small Rube Goldberg setup. Is it ideal ? No, but since the product does not have that basic functionality (which it should and needs) I was able to provide a proof of concept as to how it could be built and used. I had presented this at a SWUG in Dallas. It did garnish some…

Yep...it's the bandwidth hog pushing back the award date due to poor throughput.

There are only a few items in the thwack store I have my eye on so no danger there... I could get them right now but no rush. I'm still waiting on my Welcome kit along with most of my team.

Oh the days and hours of having to clean and analyze round reel tapes.....replace BOT and EOT markers.

You could simulate a telemetry lite sort of thing with SNMP traps. The drawback is that you can't pull data from the trap and update a component with said value.....easily. I can think of some kludgy ways, but Orion needs to be able to update components and custom property values from traps and log file entries. If the…

Good info. Certainly a different perspective to what I have worked with. The principles of code review and peer review as part of the process are good to see. The only thing I didn't see was after implementation testing/validation which should be included as part of the change ticket and procedures for backing out the…

Looks to be interesting....need time to look at.

Should be a semi annual review to make sure they are all up to date and still pertinent.

There are many aspects of this. Some monitors only need to check once per day or only within a short time frame say 5 or 10 minutes. For the once per day checks, there has to be a reset. These may not need the 24x7 monitoring with alerts only in a small window. This does not allow for a reset/re-alert if the file didn't…

We've been running with a baremetal server for our Orion database as the previous incarnation had us sharing a production SQL cluster... This has been great...although I foresee us back on a virtual machine for the DB before long. I believe that they will either put us on a separate cluster or parts of a cluster with few…

Careful Leon, you could end up with a log jam..

It is one thing if your automated process restarts something every now and then...but if it starts to happen on a regular basis you need some sort of report to let you know that a recurring problem exists. Now that report could be from your tool like solarwinds or from your ticketing system....you are creating a ticket…
