Dez nailed it ! without a baseline or a "present normal" you have no idea of when or where you "might" have a problem at least based on what you know.

Tuesday back to the office after a long not fun week away bump...

In many ways Elon Musks stunt was as much about marketing as trying to gain public interest in space...again marketing.

Thank you adatole ! Preparing for the future can be a daunting task with the changes that are happening. The biggest challenge in most shops I see is unaccounted for growth. Capacity planning is great but if you add a large number of servers/network devices/networks beyond what was planned for, you may be pressured into…

Morning Bump !!

Hmm, I like snickerdoodles. There is a place there in Austin where cookies had been procured after lunch one day that were to die for.

yes, they will deep fry most anything given the opportunity. Sometimes it is preceded by a "Here, hold my beer" moment. But I will admit a deep fried turkey is good stuff...

Wow...only 8-10 boxes of paper Back when I was an operator we went through a 1-3 pallets a day for the 3800 laser printers. They could print an entire case of paper in about 10-15 minutes. (40 cases to the pallet). That's not counting the impact, fiche, checks, etc. Pulling 300+ scratch tapes a night. The System 36 used a…

I gather it is probably cheaper than hosting an Oracle RAC cluster on a cluster of AIX servers.

Josh...you need to check into some of the new hybrid SUV's and trucks... Personally I am still waiting for a diesel electric truck or car...diesel power plant and electric motors for drive....just like the trains. 100% torque at 0 RPM.

Give them the basics..use the canned reports. Let the default metrics get tracked and logged for a period of time...then you have a baseline. Is it the baseline of what they want ? Maybe, if not then it is not your fault but you have provided a baseline, a level of performance, of the basic elements - the day to day…

Short list includes the following 1) scalability - if you can't grow big easily then it is time to look at something else. 2) ease of use - must be intuitive 3) Support - this goes without saying 4) ability to manage multiple maintenance windows across many nodes for different times on different days. It needs to apply to…

That would be an interesting claim for UPS... You're claiming how much for us breaking a pencil lead ? In looking at his website it appears the prices are for prints of the work... I still think this falls under the "I need a bigger hammer category"

sort of the opposite of "verbose". Possibly a bit of sarcastic understatement ?

yup....the stranded are much easier to move, bend, and flex. Each conductor is about a 10g-12g wire in a 1.25 - 1.5 inch diameter cable.

Thank you adatole for a wonderful series that allowed many to express themselves in a manner that is not the usual banter.

can't run a double stack .45, hands too small (actually short stubby fingers). But I do like my single stack 1911's. I would like to have one of the Dan Wesson 1911'a to go with my Dan Wesson revolvers....

When we bump it, it puts it on the general thwack page of topics recently updated so that others can see it. The more people that see it the more hopefully vote it up which allows SW to see what people want added to the product.

knucklebusted, think ITSM. You have incident, problem, and change management as parts of ITSM. At the top of the hint page it speaks of ITSM. That should help with that. Look for the items that don't have checkmarks in both columns and eliminate them from your checked answers.

Bump and repeat !!

Pretty much mirrors we see outside the Government walls although in some way they likely see more threats from not only the usual suspects but also many other governments too...

Congrats to mimcginnis !

To think they won't would be silly.

Good points here... mr.e also has a good point for Microsoft

likely will turn the cloud and anything else into "The Fog".

First Monday of the month, new mission, and a green check to boot.

Altitude...plus a camera pointing down to see if there is anything on the painted floor in front of where they need to drop down to. There could be a proximity alert for fork lifts as well...

Logs are great if you can filter out the normal "noise". Then you can find what's not normal so much easier. Then if you can correlate a message to an event that happens later then you an at least get a heads up or maybe do some corrective action.

You missed his zipline, skeet range, and driving range.
