I would iterate what jkuvlesk mentioned regarding the Success Center. There is a large amount of good data there, training opportunities, and of course there is Thwack. We are probably the best online support community out there. Note that best practices tend to be based on certain criteria. Most company environments are…

ping the private ip on the otherside of the VPN tunnel. If it is reachable the tunnel is up, if not then the vpn tunnel is down.

What sort of drops are you looking for ? Link drops, packet drops ? Depending on what you are looking for they may be other alternatives depending on the mixture of routers you have... The brand of routers you are working with would be useful information in attempting to help solve the question.

I believe you can set the MS SQL Server to encrypt the data at rest...I believe the feature is Transparent Data Encryption (TDE) available since SQL Server 2008. I'd like for someone from Solarwinds to validate that it is a supported method for encrypted data at rest..

Have you looked at your database server ? Database performance can impact it's ability to pull data from the database.

You would have to have remedy write the ticket and some correlating bit of info to a log file that orion is watching. Now with that said you might not be able to link the ticket to the event. If you did everything out of band and then re-posted the event in order to include the ticket number it can be done. It is ugly and…

Item two is easiest to accomplish by unmanaging the node prior to shutdown. It can either be scheduled or done at the time just prior to server shutdown. Item one, you always need something watching your environment. If you have multiple polling engines you can monitor the other Solarwinds server in your environment.…

The fun part you will have is if there is a custom mib. The customers cannot compile in a new mib but rather have to send it off to SolarWinds for them to compile it in. I am not sure of the amount of time for the turnaround....

Cool stuff... we have a couple of newbs that would benefit.

Hmmm....sounds like a job for a data warehouse.

It is likely related to both DB and resources.

something else to also think about...how many SNMP traps are being received from various sources ? If the trap database is large, it will also affect performance. It needs to be trimmed from time to time. Large numbers of traps even if they are not being alerted on or even set to be discarded will affect performance as…

Since you are mentioning resources...what does the monitoring environment loo like ? 1) Number of polling engines 1a) provide cpu/disk/memory of the polling engines 2) number of nodes being polled 3) How are you determining a node is down (ICMP, SNMP, WMI) ? 4) as previously requested, can you post a copy of the alert in…

Go for the NPM (network) exam first. Everything builds off of that product.

I think you are speaking of a caching name server. Basically a local or nearby DNS server that is used by the network management tools that caches the results of DNS requests. It provides several benifits...faster name resolution, a more stable environment if the primary DNS is somewhat unreliable due to being busy. I have…

I have seen this sort of thing happen from time to time recently. I have noticed that sometimes the "unread only" box spontaneously checked caused that effect. Usually happens during a refresh (F5).
