I have not found a solution for this issue. It moved lower on my priority list after I submitted it on Thwack. I am still interested in a resolution.

 The feature is account-specific. If it's enabled for one user, you'll hear it. If it's not enabled for the other user, you won't hear it. We thought that was better than making it global.

You can use the the Universal Device Poller to monitor a lot of different values on an ESX server. It helps to know the OIDs in order to build the UnDPs, and you can find most of what's available from ESX here: http://www.oidview.com/mibs/6876/VMWARE-VMINFO-MIB.html

The data stored in LEM is not in a relational database. The LEM reports engine artificially uses SQL by virtue of pre-loading your selected timeframe into a small, temporary, relational database.
