The name restriction is a result of our backend system. It seems like it should be trivial, but it has a big impact internally, so while it's something we have a plan to fix, it's not something we've been able to execute yet.

Where do you confirm/set the data portion for ICMP packets (the 0 bytes you refer to)? Try System Manager>Settings>Network.

Support seems to indicate it is due to the DB being heavily fragmented and the query timing out.
