NPM 12.3 Orion 2018.2 Upgrade Feedback

What has your upgrade to NPM 12.3 on Orion Platform 2018.2 looked like? We on the product manager team would like to hear about it all, the good the bad and the ugly! For a starting point here is a quick getting started blog post on upgrading to 2018.2 Orion Platform: Preparing for the Upgrade to 2018.2

  • Hi Serena,

I did the upgrade on our Orion server last Friday (June 1st), aside from the 3 hours or so it took to do, there was only one issue at the end of it. Our remote agent for Netpath monitoring on one of our sites stopped working at that time. Netpath is only in testing for us so far, so wasn't too worried, but thought I'd investigate prior to replying to your question. Removing the agent plugin and re-adding it, then creating the netpath monitoring services again resolved the issue. This has removed any historical netpath information, but for us this is no problem.

  • Great feedback! Do you mind letting me know a bit more about your environment? Do you have multiple products installed other than NPM and do you have scalability engines (additional polling engines, additional websites or HA back up servers?) I'm curious about that 3 hour time frame to upgrade emoticons_happy.png

  • -= HELP =-

    Hi Serena,

I am running into a problem with the NPM 12.3 Offline installer.

I am getting an error that is noting I am offline. What is the check that it is doing and under what user does this check occur? Is the installer running under the context of the user account in which I ran the executable?

Also, I would like more details about the silent installation, I would love to see better error handling like a basic ui instead of /S maybe a /qb since this was what I was trying to use and I had to do digging through the logs: "C:\ProgramData\SolarWinds\Logs\Installer\yyyy-MM-dd_hh-mm-ss\AdministrationService.Client.log"

This has been a challenge and I have been working on Orion and NPM/SAM... for over 5 years...emoticons_plain.png

    Thanks in advance,

    Philip

  • Hi Phillip!

Thanks to the help of our thwack MVP silverbacksays we have replicated this in house today. We're focused on generating a fix for this issue as soon as possible. Do you have an open support case with us on this that I can use to notify you once the fix is available?

  • Hi Serena,

We have NPM, NCM and SAM with two additional polling engines. It's all in a (large) vSphere environment.

  • wonderful thank you. Did you run the additional polling engine upgrades in parallel?

  • Hi

I had fatal error during install on additional polling engines but ran config wizard after seems to be ok. I have a copy of the file it wanted to save from one of them.

wondering if is a windows service issue as i hadnt set services back to auto just doing web front end now.

looks to be a gui issue with wpm on sumary page duplication the transaction?

looks like the wrong field has been used as the first field, the first has a from in it as well as an additional from (the correct one)

but also the hostname gets stripped out of the bindings in iis had to add back in

  • Upgraded today.   Upgrade went well except for two issues.   Tried the upgrade advisor on the website.   It gave me a button to download the online install for npm.   I could never get that to work with the proxy settings here.   No matter what we tried it would not work.   We then, mind you still using the NPM online installer, tried to download the "offline" installer.   It gave me an older version of the offline installer.   I tried twice (2gb a piece) but kept getting the older one.   I then manually downloaded the Offline installer and got the correct version.   Everything after that, including to not upgrade NTA just yet, went perfectly.

  • The upgrade to 12.3 seems to have gone off without a hitch.  The initial download took a fairly long time, 1 hour, using the online installer.  Overall, the primary upgrade took 2 hours and my additional polling engines were done in 30 minutes each.

Although it is unrelated to the 12.3 install, I've noticed that the Toolset IP Binding field in the Configuration Wizard is cut off and was present when I installed 12.2 as well.  I'm not sure if this has been noticed or documented but I have done a basic search to find out if other are reporting this.
