Execute jobs with telnet and SSH

Hi,

We have about 2000 devices in NCM.  Some use Telnet, some use SSH.

Is it possible to have NCM try telnet first, and if that fails try SSH?

This is for config backups and pushing out mass changes.

thanks.

  • Let's assume that you have added each node to NCM, and told NCM to get the configs by telnet or SSH, and not by snmp, when you added the node initially.

NCM will use whatever protocol you set it up with for each switch or router.  You shouldn't have to choose one or the other when executing a bulk configuration command.

Just select the all nodes you wish to manage (hold the Ctrl or Shift key down as you select them), right click on one, choose Execute Script, type in the script exactly as you'd do it from the console (include "config t" and include "end" when appropriate), remember to put a carriage return after the last line, and run the job from NCM.

It will use telnet or SSH as preconfigured in each node's setup.

    Good networking!

  • Yes i understand that.

The point is, i do not know which devices use telnet and which use SSH.  I would like solarwinds to try both.  That way i don't have to preconfigure anything.  I just say 'use telnet and ssh for everything' it whichever one works is the one solarwinds will use.

Ciscoworks can do it so i thought solarwinds might have a similar feature.

    Oooh Snap :D

I could definitely use something like this.  We are in the process of converting several hundred nodes from telnet to SSH so while in the conversion process this would be very handy.

  • My apologies, Rakem; I believed you already had the 2000 devices in NCM, which assumes you had already discovered them when you added them, and telnet or SSH was already applied to each one.

I didn't understand you meant that you wanted to discover and add those nodes.

You're right--the File/Settings --> Global Macro Settings --> Transfer Protocols only lets you select one protocol.

    Sorry.
