Embedded Newlines in message strings

I have a very long message returned from a HP/UX script with embedded newlines, these newlines terminate the string so it becomes truncated, I can remove these at the script end and replace with a "marker" character but how can I put back from Solarwinds end? I essentially need to replace the "marker" character with a newline again when it displays the string, I was thinking about using a "variable replacement" process with the variable defined as a newline but not sure if I can add variables to messages in the same way you can in a script

Have you tried to “quote” the entire string ?
Or you may try and “escape” the newlines in your script on the unix side.

That did the trick, I just changed the way the script returned the "results" string as per your suggestion and its working great
echo "Message.0:""$result"""

Correction, if you run a test on it the results are shown fine with the carriage returns but once submitted it truncates, I tried double quoting hoping that the results get passed as ""result"" but it seems to strip them out regardless

Ah yes...testing and running after submitting are slightly different environments. Solarwinds needs to fix that.
On the unix side you can do a substitution (really easy if you use perl) to place a specific character string and then convert it back on the windows side...(maybe).

That's what I've been doing with 'tr' and even ux2do (unix2dos outside of HP/UX) but the issue remains, the issue is really getting SolarWinds to perform a character replacement before displaying the string.

I know there are requests to provide a logic environment where we can perform scripts and do things of that sort programmatically after an event occurs...it is needed so badly especially since there is no correlation engine available. You almost have to go outside the product (send the event to an external program to process out and then re-enter the alerting engine with a new event...cumbersome and gets you into a Rube Goldberg type of environment where things a re big, huge and complicated. Unless it is built right it will not scale well.
