is Serv-U 6.1 compatible with windows 2008

We currently have Serv-u 6.1 running on a windows 2003 server.  We'd like to do an in place upgrade on the OS to 2008 but I'm not sure if 6.1 is compatible.  If we have to upgrade Serv-u up to V 12, can we upgrade right to version 12 from 6 or do we have have to go in steps, to version, 7, 8, etc.

Or should we upgrade to a certain version of Serv-u while running on server 2003, upgrade the OS and then finish the Serv-u upgrade?

this is all i could find but it lacks detail.

Thanks,

  • According to that link, it looks like you'll have to go from 6.1 -> intermediate version -> latest version.

    What I would try:

    -BACK UP EVERYTHING

-BACK IT UP AGAIN TO A SECOND PLACE JUST IN CASE

-on the 2003 machine, upgrade in place to version 8 (or 9, 10, 11, etc).

    -upgrade OS

    -upgrade to latest version

-test & make sure everything worked- if not, restore & try a different path

The latest version is 15.1.2: MFT Server Release Notes | Serv-U

  • Thank you Josh.

If possible, we'd just as soon update the OS on the server to 2008 but keep Serv-u on version 6.

Do you know if version 6 is compatible with windows 2008?

  • According to http://http://www.serv-u.com/releasenotes/releasenotes6x.asp, the release date for 6.1 was just over 10 years ago (June 30, 2005).  Since this predates windows 2008 by roughly 3 years, there might not be any official support.

That being said, microsoft is usually very good about not breaking backward compatibility.  You may have to disable UAC, put it in compatibility mode, or something of that nature.

I'd say your chances of getting it working are very good- give it a shot.  I can't think of any reason why it would not work.

  • I have ServU 6.4.0.4 running on several Windows7, Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008R2 systems and it works just fine. (for years now)

Dunno about v6.1, but I assume that there might be no difference in this regard.
