Information on hardware type (physical or virtual)

What version of NPM are you running? Once I know that, I can guide you on how to create a suitable report.

Hi silverbacksays I'm looking for a similar report where I can breakdown physical vs virtual devices, any chance you could assist?

Essentially I'd like a report that can list out VM's & Physical devices in our entire inventory & then split that out if needed...

ETA - I did however find a report that allows me to view "Current - Hardware Status" & this proved useful in determining Physical devices...

To get your virtual device information, use this SQL query as the basis for your report:

use SolarWindsOrion

select nodes.caption, nodes.IP_Address, dbo.VIM_VirtualMachines.IPAddress from dbo.nodes

inner join dbo.vim_virtualmachines

ON

nodes.ip_Address = VIM_VirtualMachines.IPAddress

You'll need to add in the relevant fields from the nodes table to get the information you want in the report as in the above I've just added in the node caption (node name) and IP address, so you can see that the inner join works. It's looking for a matching IP address is both nodes and VIM_VirtualMachines table, which indicates that the node is a VM.

Additionally, you could add in SQL 'SORT' and 'GROUP' arguments to the end to format the resulting output as required.

Just to let you know, this seems to have worked (I only say that as I need to do some cross validation & other fun things like that) but so far, really looking good! Thank you very much for your help & time with this, greatly appreciated!!

Solarwinds teams - unsure whether you'd want to look at building this (or very similar) into the 'standard' set of reporting that is shipped with the product as I imagine I'm not the only one out there who needs this kind of detail from time to time?

You can also do a

SELECT n.Caption, n.VirtualMachine.VirtualMachineID

From Orion.Nodes n

Wherever the virtualmachine ID is NULL, it's a physical box. You can add the rest as you need.
