How best to use Package Boot Helper to copy a file?

    rjroati@hotmail.com

This is a question regarding Patch Manager Case 743966.  I'm attempting to use the Package Boot Helper for the first time to help deploy a Cisco AnyConnect msi package. In addition to deploying the .msi file, I need to copy an .xml file to a specific directory after the .msi package installation is complete. What is the best way to do this?  In the Package Boot Helper, I'm attempting to run a .cmd file after installation is complete that invokes either the copy command or the xcopy command to copy the .xml file. Both the .cmd file and the .xml file are added as additional files to the deployment in the Package Content Editor. However, the .xml file is not being copied when the .msi is installed..  Here is the current syntax of the .cmd file:

      @echo off

      copy Providence_DefaultPolicy.xml "C:\ProgramData\Cisco\Cisco Anyconnect Secure Mobility Client\Profile\"

When I double click on the .cmd file to run it manually, the file is copied.  I've checked my spelling in Solar Winds Patch Manager.  Is there a different or better way to do what I am trying to do?

      Thank you!

      Sincerely,

      Richard Roati

However, the .xml file is not being copied when the .msi is installed..

There are two reasons this can happen:

          1. The command is defective and thus failing.
          2. The INSTALLER is not returning the correct result codes, and the post-execution steps are not executing at all.

To test this, set the result action of the "Apply package" step to "Continue with next action if this action fails".

If your copy command then works, the defect is in not identifying all of the necessary "Success codes" for the installer.

If it doesn't work, then you'll have to assume that the command is defective.

In the Package Boot Helper, I'm attempting to run a .cmd file after installation is complete

This is overkill. There is no need to write a script to call a simple COPY/XCOPY/ROBOCOPY command. Plus, calling a script from PackageBoot is a bit more complex. You've not provided any information on how you've configured the script to execute, so my educated guess would be that this has not been done correctly.

          The simple solution is this:

          • Create a "Run a program" task.
          • Define the Program Name as "XCOPY.EXE" or "ROBOCOPY.EXE"
          • Set the "Run program from specified directory" to %SYSTEM%
          • Set the command line parameters to %MODULEPATH%\YOURFILE.XML TheFullyQualifiedDestinationPath AnyNecessaryCommandLineParameters

Thanks, Lawrence. I am testing your steps now and I hope to have an answer tomorrow.

                Hi Lawrence,

Thanks for your help.  I thought I followed your instructions.  The .msi package installed this morning after 3 am, but the .xml file did not copy over.

I'm attaching screenshots now in case you might see something, and I'm pasting the information from the WindowsUpdate.log from a client that installed the package but did not copy the file, in case that might help.

Also, here are the command line parameters, which are difficult to capture:

                %MODULEPATH%\Providence_DefaultPolicy.xml "C:\ProgramData\Cisco\Cisco Anyconnect Secure Mobility Client\Profile\"

Sorry for the bother, but thanks very much for your help with this!

The WindowsUpdate.log won't help in this matter because this activity is actually happening external to the Windows Update Agent.

For the sake of clarity, I would encourage you to remove all of the "sample actions" from the package.

Do you actually have any other "After applying package" tasks that are relevant.

The "Continue with next action" selection is supposed to be made on the "Install anyconnect" step, not the after-install action.

Almost certainly in this instance, I'm inclined to believe that the "After applying package" tasks are not being executed at all because the success result codes are incomplete.

This is, in fact, a very common scenario when dealing with after-install actions.
