Purpose of these files - necessary for backup?

      Hello,

During a recent backup of one of our Linux servers, these files were all truncated before the backup utility picked them up, throwing an error. I'd like to know what these files do and whether they are needed for backup in the event the server goes down. What would we lose if we don't have these files?
