Download & Install new Apple Push Notifications Certificate!

    Peter Krutý

One of the WHD features is the ability to push notifications to your mobile phone using the Apple Push Notifications Service. This service requires a certificate which expires today. If you want to continue using these notifications you need to install the new certificate availalbe from your customer portal.

Click on License Management -> Choose Download (under Web Help Desk license information) -> scroll to Tools & Plugins and click Download button next to "Apple Push Notification (APN) Certificate".

just a note on this- when you download the push cert, there is installation instructions in a text file with it.

If you are using a Mac server and you follow these instructions to the letter, you will blow away your WHD install.

          Docs say-

          TO INSTALL:

          (1) Stop Web Help Desk.

          (2) Make a backup copy of the following file:

              <WebHelpDesk>/bin/webapps/helpdesk/WEB-INF/Helpdesk.woa/Contents/Resources/PushNotificationProductionCertificate.p12

          (3) Copy the "bin" folder from this hotfix to your <WebHelpDesk> folder and rewrite all files.

          (4) Start Web Help Desk.

          Docs SHOULD say-

          TO INSTALL:

          (1) Stop Web Help Desk.

          (2) Make a backup copy of the following file:

              <WebHelpDesk>/bin/webapps/helpdesk/WEB-INF/Helpdesk.woa/Contents/Resources/PushNotificationProductionCertificate.p12

          (3) Copy the "'PushNotificationProductionCertificate.p12' from this hotfix to your

          <WebHelpDesk>/bin/webapps/helpdesk/WEB-INF/Helpdesk.woa/Contents/Resources/

folder and overwrite the old file if asked. You did back it up, right?

          (4) Start Web Help Desk.

Thanks for info, I asked our QA to verify the instructions and we will update them if needed.

The instructions in the download are still wrong, and as user "adamc" noted above, are very dangerous:  you will indeed blow away your WHD install if you follow them!

The problem is that whoever is writing the instructions is writing them with only a knowledge of how Windows works, and is seemingly ignorant of Mac OS X.

In Windows, if you copy a folder to a location with an identially-named folder, it will merge the contents of the folders, replacing any same-named files in the destination with those from the source.

In Mac OS X, if you copy a folder to a location with an identically-named folder, it will replace the old folder completely with the new folder.  There's no merging of the contents:  the old folder (and all of its contents) is gone.  Because of this, If you followed the instructions on OS X, you'd end up with a production "bin" folder with exactly one file in it (the new push cert), and you just completely hosed your WHD installation.

Your documentarians need to learn their platforms, and do proper testing of their installation instructions on all platforms, before they release patches and fixes.
