We are using a 500GB volume that is hosted on an IBM XIV behind an SVC, fiber attached, it's presented to the server as an NTFS drive and we haven't run into issues yet (only been up for about a day so far with NTA 4.0).
I suppose it would depend on traffic and the size of the environment, but our netflow database server is a virtual machine in our vsphere cluster with a virtual disk on an Equallogic SAN and it works fine with no performance issues.
currently the NTA 4.0 (or 4.0.1) only works with local NTFS drive used for storage.
This is a technically accurate, but very misleading answer. As long as the SAN (or hypervisor) presents the drive to the operating system as a local NTFS drive, it will work fine. In other words, just don't present the volume to the local Windows OS as a NAS fileshare, and it will work.
