SAM Template Thresholds - Realistic?

Hello ,

I have a general question for anyone who might have some more info. We've been working with SAM templates lately and we have realized that most of the thresholds that are pre-configured , have their thresholds set up ridiculously low, and as a result they trigger all the time, even though the system is performing well and with no delays. I was wondering about who decided for the values set for component thresholds, and what they are based on? Are they based on real-time production environments or just created in a "perfect world"?

Also wondering, is there a chance we can get some more info on the actual components of each template and what they mean? I found the SAM template reference document, but it simply copies the textual information existing on the web console. Any chance for more insightful info on each individual component?

Thresholds are based solely upon the application vendor's best practices. Microsoft in particular tends to have a ideological perspective when it comes to defining these "Best Practice" thresholds, which is in part one of the reasons why we developed the Threshold Baseline Calculator. As for additional details on individual components, are there any particular ones you're having difficulty with? We are making efforts to work with application vendors to improve the Expert Knowledge included within SAM's Application Templates, but if there are some specific components you feel are lacking significant detailed information that is important we'd like to know.

I have a situation where i need to have three threshold levels based on the linux script output that we are using to monitor a flow.
2 - critical
1 - warning
0 - down
is there a way to achieve this. Currently 0 is showing as UP and 1 and 2 are showing correct status. We tried by putting no values in the linux script output then the status is Unknown. I want 0 to reflect the flow is down.

Scripts must report their status by exiting with the appropriate exit code:
Exit Code
Meaning
0
Up
1
Down
2
Warning
3
Critical
Any other value
Unknown

Hi Alex,
you can use script exit codes to switch a component to a particular state. Linux script monitor supports following ones:
Up = 0, Down = 1, Warning = 2, Critical = 3, Unknown = 4
If you use an exit code to set down/warning/critical/unknown state then no thresholds are applied to a statistic value.
