Monitor SQL Service Only

I just recently purchased SAM and am learning my way around it.  My Database team monitors all their SQL stuff using another product so I don't need the detail performance stuff that the SQL templates give me.  Is there a template out there that just looks at the SQL service itself and tells me when it goes down?  The server team just needs to know when the service stops because it will impact other applications.  The database team stays on top of everything else.

Thanks,

Brad

  • Brad,

You could do a couple of things. Copy the template and name it something else, then go in and delete whatever monitors you don't want.  Another option would be creating a new template and just adding a Process monitor-WMI  for "sqlservr.exe" , "sqlagent.exe", etc. (or whatever the name is for your SQL agents). The names of whatever you want to monitor would go in the Process Name part of the template.  You can monitor any process you want with it . I've created a few lite templates for basic SQL and other java processes I have to watch.

I'd ask your database team if they're aware of all the SQL processes that Solarwinds can watch. It would provide them with good historical and performance data.

  • gregatkins is correct. Possibly the simplest way would be to use the "Find Processes, Services, and Performance Counters" wizard under [Settings -> SAM Settings]. This wizard will walk you through the process of creating a new application template.
