IPAM Question

IPAM data is available through our standard API, which has both SOAP and REST variants. You should be able to figure out "next available unused IP" with a query or two through this API. However, we do not have an API for reserving/assigning a hostname to an IP address at this time; this will prevent you from automating step 2.

Let's say I find the next available IP and I add it to DNS, could i then initiate a rescan of the subnet from the API? Would this then autopopulate the IP address as being in use?

Or is there any other way to associate DNS name to an IP address via the API?

Finally, do you know where I can find the API reference documentation? I've found the Orion SDK PDF so far, but i'm looking for something more detailed.

The reference documentation should be on the start menu under "Schema Reference" where you installed the Orion SDK.

Thanks very much. I'm really hopeful this functionality is available in some way. So far i'm liking the IPAM interface and everything but if we have no way to automate the allocating of IP addresses to Hosts we will need to find another way I've previously done this with Infoblox but naturally that adds cost and additional work to the mix.

you can simply call this method and SWQL query that returns first Available IP for selected subnet: Get-SwisData $swis 'SELECT TOP 1 I.DisplayName FROM IPAM.IPNode I WHERE Status=2 AND I.Subnet.DisplayName = ''192.168.1.0 /24'' '

That will show you the next available IP, but how do you then assign it as used and put in a computer name?

This operation is not currently supported in the API.

Does solarwinds have any suggestions/recommendations on how to auto provision IP's for private cloud type environments then?

Non official answer here but I am needing to do the same thing. If you can can find the next available IP by SQL query and insert a status of reserved, comments that it was res for vcenter, and hostname into a custom property such as alias (to compare against hostname when it returns) then why not do it all through SQL?

we can currently find next available IP, but inserting/changing the status via API is currently not supported. we are working on improvements and complete API support for IPAM operations (update/add). if you use SQL it's a workaround but I do not recommend that because it may break IPAM functionality (we've tried that and didn't have a good results with that).
