Re: How do I configure the SNMP community string for LEM?
prawij Oct 10, 2012 12:55 PM (in response to prawij)Per Solarwinds support (Case 393642)
"Currently there is no support for modification to the community string of the SNMP. The SNMP is an incoming only and is not modifiable. It is possible in future versions of LEM that this will be added to integrated into other Solarwinds products"
Please consider adding this functionality in future revisions of LEM.
Thanks.

It's important to note for anyone following along at home that LEM is used for traps only, not for health monitoring, so the feature request is actually around adding health monitoring, not just modifying the community string (though when we add health monitoring, we'll need to make it so you can modify the string).
If you didn't already post this over in the Feature Requests area, be sure to do so, so other people can also vote on it!

Re: How do I configure the SNMP community string for LEM?
prawij Oct 17, 2012 12:21 PM (in response to nicole pauls)Just to clarify:
We would like to be able to change the community string so that the LEM virtual appliance could be monitored along with our other network devices via Orion Network Performance Monitor (NPM), specifically so we can monitor its disk utilization without logging into its management interface via SSH. We don't need LEM to provide the health monitoring of the devices it's receiving logs from, as we use NPM for that task.
Currently we have it added into NPM via ICMP (ping only). So we can tell it's up, but that's about it.
Thanks.

DeanBennett Nov 21, 2012 2:11 AM (in response to prawij)I'd also like to monitor our LEM virtual appliance in the same way.

familyofcrowes Mar 15, 2013 12:39 PM (in response to prawij)I am looking to monitor the LEM as well using Orion...
Just standard Linux monitoring... Can we use the Linux monitors in SAM? CPU, disk space, zombies, etc?

Re: How do I configure the SNMP community string for LEM?
Bahlkris Aug 22, 2013 12:36 PM (in response to nicole pauls)I'm under the impression from the docs that there is a default RO SNMP string in place on LEM, is it possible to get that string from support so I can put our LEM server in Orion NPM so we can monitor it for outages? Id rather not do straight ICMP monitoring but I will if I have to.

The appliance does have default SNMP community strings (they are truly defaults, public/private), but SNMP monitoring is turned off entirely - even when you enable SNMP traps, it only enables the trap collector, not the SNMP monitoring side of things.

It's on our list still, no change from current behavior.

Re: How do I configure the SNMP community string for LEM?
prawij Aug 4, 2016 12:53 PM (in response to nicole pauls)Looks like this been implemented in LEM version 6.3 currently available as an RC:
"LEM monitoring through NPM and the Orion Web Console
You can configure SNMP version 3 on your LEM appliance to communicate with SolarWinds Network Performance Manager (NPM) through ports 161 and 162. This configuration allows you to monitor CPU, memory, and other critical components from the SolarWinds Orion Web Console.
Other improvements
- Disk warning feature that alerts you when your disk storage reaches 75% capacity
- CMC appliance menu updates to assist with SSO configuration
- Upgrade to Java® 8 for improved security"

Re: How do I configure the SNMP community string for LEM?
curtisi Feb 20, 2014 1:15 PM (in response to prawij)I don't have access to Orion to test what comes out on the other end, but...
There is an SNMP active response connector that can be configured on the LEM. It has exactly no configuration besides the Tool Alias, so the whole "SNMP community" thing is still out there.
Now, go to your rules. You have an option to send SNMP Trap Alerts.
What does the output look like from this? I have no idea. What's the MIB for it? I don't know. How is the LEM including whatever information I picked into the SNMP trap? No clue. I haven't played with this a lot. But you could have a rule(s) looking for Internal events (the LEM logging about itself) and then have it do whatever this is, and maybe that can be a launching point for making the LEM do what you're looking for. Or just have the LEM e-mail you.

In terms of security, I would be hesitant on allowing any SNMP monitoring on LEM by an external tool, especially SNMPv1 or v2c.
If the need for monitoring CPU and memory is there, use the integration with vCenter to grab the information.

Re: How do I configure the SNMP community string for LEM?
tsmith@dpath.com Aug 11, 2014 1:10 PM (in response to cscoengineer)We all have our favorite way of processing data and collecting it. Though snmp v1 is a bad idea. v2 and definitely v3 would be ok. At the switching level Access control lists can be implemented to protect the communication between devices. I personally have a group in NPM that is my entire production servers. and I have created a trigger on the "fixed disk" that are on any device in the group. This covers Linux and windows machines. I would definitely setup this if it was possible. My LEM filled up and we had a grand ole time getting it back up and running again. but I called for support and they were very fast to fix it. I just had to except that it was "support ticket time".
