You can definitely use the 1 application monitor applied to multiple servers. If you are using 10 individual components it is pretty trivial to just disable the unused ones.
We have a similar setup to monitor a certain application. Some instances have additional data points that need to be monitored, so they are included in the base template and disabled. When we apply the template to a server that needs the extra data points we just enable the components.
Thank you for the confirmation. This makes everything so much easier and keeps the alerts I need to create and managed down to 1.
If they're email servers you can use a round-trip test. That will just test if email if functioning and will give you a single alert if its not.
I use mxalerts.com which seems like the cheapest and easiest to use but there are others.
