Unable to update Windows Update Agent

The problem is the <servername> probably doesnt allow for anonymous access, which is how the connection from the endpoint is made.

I would check the security event log on that machine to see specifically what is going on with the error, however that is my suspicion.

If you are unable to modify the file server security settings, I would recommend putting the Windows Update Agent exe on a web server (perhaps the WSUS server itself).

The location of the agent files is on the WSUS/EminentWare server itself.

So if your saying that anonymous access is required from the endpoint then that would mean that even if I set the Share/NTFS permissions to everyone/full control it still wont work?

Thats correct. If you dont allow anonymous, then the share/file/dir permissions will be irrelevant because you will be denied before getting to that point. We put this option in for folks that have appliances/NAS devices that can be easily setup this way. In your case, I would just add this file in the wsus content folder and access via http. That's my 2 cents.

I've just placed it in the WsusContent folder and accessed it via Http. I'm going to use that option instead of potenially opening a security hole via anon logon.

Okay, I've been able to update the agent.

Is there a way to set the default download locations for the agent and not have it go back to download.microsoft.com/.././/.etc.
