    Basic question about STM please

    patriot

I am sifting through the admin guide to see how STM works. What is the difference between a Provider and an Agent?

What is the stepwise process by which STM collects data from a storage array?

      Thanks for any help.

An agent is a host with the Storage Manager Agent installed on it.  With this, you are able to monitor the host itself (asset info, storage, performance, etc) as well as use it monitor devices in your environment, taking the load off of the Storage Manager server.

A SMI-S provider is a piece of software developed by the array vendor that allows us to poll for statistics on the array.  This can either be a standalone application, a component of the array's management software, or embedded in the array itself.

We poll the SMI-S provider for information and it, in turn, polls the array.
