Node grouping by wildcard

Is there a way to group nodes by the first x amount of characters in the node name? For example, all of our devices are named by the following pattern: yy-zzzzz-ddd1234-01 where yy is the country code, zzzzz is a unique site code, ddd is a device identifier (swi, rtr, etc), 1234 is the device model number and the last is the unique device identifier.

So I want to be able to group my nodes by the yy-zzzzz identifier so that nodes at each site are grouped together. Is this possible or does anyone have some ideas to make this work?

Interesting, this would definitely be a help. We have leading variables for our node names, not quite the same as yours but I get where this is going and see how it can help the tedious task of grouping similar nodes.

This is kind of possible by using the search feature when adding a new group. Leave the sorting by Vendor and just filter the nodes by using the search, ex: yy-zzzzz and then just click on all the vendor icons. Not perfect, but a thought.

Does a dynamic query for your group work?
goto Manage Groups, click Add New Group, Name something like "Site YY-XXXX" next, click Add dynamic query, Name "Begins with YY-XXXX" - Object is Node (click add condition) Caption begins with YY-XXXX

Yes, I could get it this way. However, we have over 500 sites and would prefer to not have to do this 500 times. I was hoping for something dynamic.

yeah, I had to create around 50 and I didn't like it either, but thats what I did. A scripting interface would have been nice.
