NOTICE: Storage Response Time Monitor (missing data)

    jgervin

UPDATE: We have posted new bits for download that better illustrates what data we have and what data we don't (discussed below). This update will NOT fix the issues for those of you using 4.0 or other versions that don't provide all the metrics, but will make it more clear when your version is not fully supported, rather then just showing no data/information.

I am writing this as I wipe the egg of my face. So it looks like some you out there, SRTM users, are expecting certain data from the tool, but are left waiting at the alter. After some digging through the data and code or development team has pinpointed the issue, which is as follows.

After the release of 4.1 earlier versions stopped playing nice with SRTM even though our code had not changed.

In order to show the data that we show we need disk metrics and data store metrics. Each provides the following:

Disk Metrics allow us to show:
The connection, its type, device and kernel latency (if appropriate).

Datastore Metrics allow us to show:
      Datastore latency and VM IOPTs.

So the you will *always* see the connection, its type, and is latency breakdown if the type supports breakdown.

When the datastore metrics are not available the you will see “n/a” in the connection’s latency and will see *no* VMs as none of the VMs will have IOPS available.

Here is what our support matrix looks like:

      vCenter 4.0

      vCenter 4.1

      vCenter 5.0

      ESX 3.5

We will have the bits updated in the near future, which will at least show that IOP's information is not available rather than just missing.
