Netflow service stopping

I am seeing the following error in my log files: Critical error in NetFlow listener: This operation returned because the timeout period expired.

When this happens the Netflow service needs to be restarted. How can I tell what might be causing this?

Does this happen on the system startup? Or on any deterministic occation, or just randomly?

It seems to happen randomly, I checked the event logs and there doesn't seem to be a pattern or a series of events that precede the service stopping. The times are usually between 10:30pm and 2:30am. Since August 23 it has happened 11 times.

It most probably seems to be a performance problem (do you happen to have quite large environment managed?). I would sugest collecting diagnostics, also some wireshark packet capture (if it is possible for you) and opening support ticket so we can investigate your case more closely.

If I could ask, what was the outcome of this problem? I'm seeing the same random behavior. When it occurs again, I'll run diags and open a case.

Just it case this somehow happened to any of you like it did me.
I had a problem with the service stopping. I took a look in Services and the service startup was set to manual for some reason.

Expanding on pyro13g's cause, tech support had me run the configuration wizard (database and services only) to fix some things. It appears the netflow service was having problems communicating with information services.

This error is wreaking havoc for us causing HA fail-overs.
Support simply recommended to upgrade to the latest NTA version.
Anyone else inflicted by this still?
Is it really unfix-able 9 years later?

I remember seeing this type of weird behavior in older NTA versions: Netflow service stopping randomly and when you manually bring it back up, it just goes back down given some time. It was with older NTA versions, and don't remember seeing it in the field for newer versions....4.2.3 or above.
If there is no obvious reason that you can spot, i'd recommend upgrading like hpstech said.
