Node Status is "Unknown"

I have set up email notifications to alert me when node status is not up. It has been working fine until recently when I started getting alerts that say that the Node, Interface, or Application status is Unknown. Sometimes it says that the Node status is Warning too.

This wasn't the case at first as it used to reflect the actual status, now I do not understand what Unknown is, is it down or is it unreachable, will it turn to down? What is Warning, what is the difference between Warning and Down, and why did it suddenly started sending Warning alerts instead of Down?

If anyone has gone through this before I would be delighted with his support.

Node status is strictly the ping status for the ode
Unknown is a problem with Orion
Up is pinging
Down is not pinging
Warning is pinging but with packet loss.

I too have a concern on this, wherein I add a ping only device, and it shows up as unknown; how do I exclude if from map calculations as the map has a grey icon because it has an unknown node on it?

I have checked the documentation but i still do not understand, why could be the status unknown? what does that indicate, does it indicate that it is unreachable?
What if an application status is unknown by APM or interface status unknown, what does that mean?

Hello,
I have seen this before as well. I think this might be related to blips in the SNMP polling where the poll either wasn't finished or something happened to the reply etc.
I can't recall what I did for a sollution, but I do remember that some of these cleared up when I upgraded the system from NPM 9.5.1 to 10. Also perhaps setting the trigger time a little higher? Allowing the poller to run a second time before you create an alert..
I would definately open a ticket with support though, there could be underlying issues causing this that can easily be remedied.

Thanks vaiper, but this is not something that happens sometimes, its something that happens always, i mean every APM alert i receive and most interface alerts are "unknown", so it is not an error that occurred in traffic or something that happens sometimes with the poller, and the same thresholds and trigger times used to work fine before.

Any other suggestions anybody?
