Orion NPM Trap Viewer - How does it handle Traps it doesn't have the MIBs for?

Will Trap Viewer process traps that it doesn't have MIBs in the MIB database for or will they be dropped?  Some trap management apps will drop the trap (unless there told not to) if they have not been provided with the MIBs to decode it.  How does Orion handle this?

Thanks,
Jason Henson

  • In our implementation, we are catching traps without the corresponding MIBs in the DB. We even alert on them...

  • Hi Scott--

If it is okay privacy-wise, can you post how you are doing that for the benefit of the community.

  • Sure!

we arent really doing anything special to accomplish this. We have a few vendor apps that require a config file be edited in order to send traps to an NMS. These systems are usually telecom related and their mibs are very specific as to what is included; most of them dont even incude interface OID's.

Anyway, as long as we have configured the file correctly, Orion has no problem receiving, displaying or alerting on them.

The only difference is in the varbinds. The oid's will be displayed as opposed to the oid's friendly names.
