Transmist Discards

Hi all,

I recently started monitoring my uplink ports to my telco for all my wan connections and I am seeing major transmit discards. I am seeing about 30,000 - 90,000 discards an hour. I was wondering how does one find out why there are all these discards and what it could be. I have confirmed all duplex and speed setting are in sync and I am not sure what else to ask the telco to do as there is no degraded service on these connections.

Also, I am getting 0 receive errors, 0 receive discards and 0 transmit errors on all devices

Any help is appreciated.

is there a QOS policy on the interfaces that could be dropping packets? If you have the netflow plugin you can watch CBQQoS for any drops due to a policy

Hi, there is a qos policy except its not for the uplink to the telco but rather on the uplink to the other switches. I do have the netflow module yet the 3560 switches do not support netflow as far as I know.

It also might be an ACL/policy issue, I'm pretty sure those count as drops. I know they do on a firewall.

It's also a symptom of the interface not being fast enough to accept all packets that need transmitted(Congestion). Example: We have some DS3 that can't empty packets fast enough entering the router through the FastEthernet port.
You can either upgrade the speed of the interface or guarantee your most important traffic has the lowest drop preference through QoS.

Basically, if you have output discards but the link does not have high utilization, the interface is too slow to handle the traffic rate.
