Real world data wanted!! How is your Orion server performing?

I posted this question some time back in this forum, and I thought it would be interesting to get some updated information from Orion users.

I am interested in knowing how well your production Orion server (or servers) is performing in your network environment. Specifically, I want to know the following data for each polling server you have:

Server OS

Server CPU type, number and speed

Server RAM

Number of nodes

Number of interfaces

Total elements

Other SolarWinds modules running?

SQL DB local or remote?

Polls per second for ICMP and SNMP

Polling intervals other than default?

Typical CPU Load and % RAM used

As Orion NPM changes and becomes even more sophisticated, I am very interested in this kind of real world data.

Your responses need not contain any proprietary information and will be greatly appreciated.

                     NPM/NF/IPAM/IPSLA - dual proc, 4GB RAM
                     NPM addt'l PE/IPSLA   x3 - single proc, 4GB RAM
Addt'l Web srv   x2 load balanced - single proc 2GB RAM

    Number of nodes

                     avg 110/50

    Polling intervals other than default?
                     120sec/5min

Typical CPU Load and % RAM used
25%cpu / 75% mem used on SQL (set for that).
                  30%cpu /  60% on NPM
                  40%cpu /  40% on addt'l PE
                  30%cpu /  75% on addt'l Web servers

    Poller Completion
currently running ~99.4% or better on all engines

we haven't implemented IPSLA or IPAM yet, just finished eval and purchased.
Also just added an additional poller for IPSLA load anticipated.

    Polling intervals other than default?
    95% set at default

Typical CPU Load and % RAM used:
    CPU averages about 40%
    RAM 99% due to SQL

I am in the process of replacing this box with a dedicated web server and dedicated SQL server because Orion is very slow with our current configuration. The current server is a Dell Blade with 2 mirrored hard disks running NPM, NCM, APM, IPAM and SQL.

  • Server OS: Windows Server 2008

    Server CPU Type/Num/Speed: Xeon/2/2.67 GHz

    RAM: 12

    Num Nodes: 1556

    Num Interfaces: 3734

    Total Elements: 6493

Other Solarwinds modules Running: NCM, APM, NetFlow

SQL DB Local or Remote: Remote

Poles per second ICMP and SNMP: 50/51 (outstanding will typically runin the 100s, currently at 300).

Polling intervals other then the default: Not sure what u are asking here. Are you asking if we have some monitors with intervals less/ greater then the default 300 Seconds?

    Typical CPU/RAM used - 20%/45%

  • I have an SLX machine running the website, APM, and  IP SLA. Windows 2003 64x, this is a 2x Quadcore w/ 16gb of ram. Bit of an overkill. It polls 3000 elements, ~40 IP SLA, 1190 APMs, ~200 UnDPs, and a LOT of traps. PPS[35 ICMP | 30 SNMP] AvgCPU:9% AvgMEM:17%

    Next I have a poller on hardware, 1x Quadcore w/ 8gb of ram. Windows 2003 64x. It polls 3 nodes, but totals 11,518 elements across those 3 nodes. PPS[95 ICMP | 55 SNMP] AvgCPU:10% AvgMEM20%

Last poller is a virtual machine, we give it 2x 3.ghz cores and 2gb of ram. Windows 2003 64x. It polls 10482 elements. PPS[90 ICMP | 100 SNMP] AvgCPU:11% AvgMEM:24%

    Our DB server is physical hardware. 2x Quadcore w/ 16gb of ram. 6x 146gb 15k rpm in (unfortunately) Raid 6. 64x OS and 64x SQL. AvgCPU:12% AvgMEM:95%

These devices are all Dell2950's (ESX cluster included) running in the same LAN segment.

For polling the default is 300s/300s/300s with a rediscovery of 1440 minutes. However, many devices and interfaces are more critical and set to 120s instead.

Statistics are similar, 10m/9m/15m although many interfaces collect every minute.

Retention is 35d/35d/365d/30d. I do the 35d retention on detailed statistics for monthly 95th percentile compositions.

My performance is pretty much crap. Several minutes to load pages, particularly anything with NetFlow. Timeouts on page loads during peak hours, on occasion. I've been told by Solarwinds people this is largely due to the fact that I'm running my SQL Server's storage on a SAN, but I don't really have the option to get it off the SAN. It also doesn't help that the SAN is XIV, which seems slower than traditional SANs.

  • I don't know much about IBM SAN but my experience primarily EMC Symmetrix on the 10K switches... the performance awsome... and depending on configuration better than many local disk arrays... now NAS on the other hand... not always so good.  My SolarWinds configuration pales in size to some of yours though.
