I'm not sure if this is the best location for this post. We're just starting to investigate WOL but one thing scares us off.
We don't like the risks of using Directed Broadcast; but it seems to be the only way to distribute the the magic packets to remote destinations. We have a very large network with hundreds of subnets spread over dozens of dozens of routers. We normally have directed broadcast turned off and I'm not thrilled with the idea of turning it on for all these networks.
What are anyone else's thoughts on this?
If you have a Windows server at each remote location, you could install the SolarWinds WOL free tool at each remote location and use it
to send the magic packet to the local network via a scheduled task, e.g. That saves you from having to enable directed broadcast.
