MS Windows Update Causes 'Service Unavailable'

      From Casey Schmit, SW Development

Summary:  MS has released a patch that can break IIS 6 on Win2k3.  There appears to be nothing Orion specific about this issue.
Fix:  Reinstall 2K3 SP2 or uninstall the patch.

As part of MS's normal patch Tuesday (of this week), an IIS 6.0 update for Windows 2003 was included(http://support.microsoft.com/kb/973917).  It would appear that there are situations where this update can result in IIS not starting up properly, causing the Orion website to fail.  A quick search on this KB shows *many* users are experiencing this problem.

The situation that appears to cause this issue is installing 2003 SP2, then installing IIS, and when IIS asks for files, not using a slipstreamed SP2 installer disk.  Instead a user inserts a 2K3 RTM or 2K3 SP1 disk.  This leaves IIS files in a mismatched state, which apparently causes no problem until this patch is installed.

There doesn't appear to be anything that we can do from the Orion side to fix this.  However, MS has released an a KB article(thanks to Ryan Donovan for finding this) that discusses this issue: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=2009746.  The solution is to reinstall SP2.  Another solution that appears to have been successful to users is to uninstall the patch associated with that KB.
